Thanks to Aires/Quickboost for providing more of their excellent aftermarket parts for IPMS USA to review, and to IPMS leadership for sending it my way.

The new Airfix Mark 1 1/48 Spitfire is, by all accounts, an excellent kit. Detail is on par with 1/32 kits… and will make a show-stopper if built to the max.

One area which can, however, be improved on,is the Rotol Propeller. The kit items are slightly heavy; a resin replacement is definitely in order!

The Quickboost item addresses two areas; the thickness of the propeller blades themselves, and the spinner itself. The kit item has a baseplate, to which a propeller assembly is attached (it is keyed, so you can’t really mess it up), after which you install the spinner itself.

Thanks to Aires/Quickboost for providing more of their prolific output for us to review, and to IPMS leadership for sending it my way.

These are ridiculously simple additions to the basic Airfix BI/III merlin engine kit; they are drop in replacements for the kit air scoops, and as such have hollowed-out intakes in place of the kit items, which have the injection point where the hollow intake should be.

This is a great place to put the injection point, as it makes it blemish –free on the sides of the intakes…. If Airfix had over-engineered the intakes to have the injection points on the sides, along with two halves for the scoops, it would about be a nightmare to assemble correctly, and would have resulted in wailing and gnashing of teeth…

Quickboost once again saves us AMS modelers from ourselves… remove from the pour stubs, and glue in place.

A worthwhile purchase, highly recommended… Thanks to Aires/Quickboost for these items!

History Brief

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor aircraft/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. It was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force. The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It featured a tandem two-seat with twin-engines. It can carry more than 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4 was designed without an internal cannon, but later models incorporated an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record.

Very little flash and the parts fit very well on this kit. I had thought about trying to fit a V8 engine but the car is just too small.

Engine

The little 4-banger engine is very well detailed with all the parts fitting extremely well.

Interior

Interior panels are very well engraved and cry out to be detailed.

Body

There’s no chrome on the body. I made the mistake of masking all the window frames and painting them with black chrome when all that really needs to be done is paint the edge of the glass. The body is in beautiful shape right out of the box. I used HOK marine blue to get a pretty close to factory color.

This really cool kit to work on and Revell needs to be commended for their craftsmanship. Thank you also to IPMS for allowing me to review this kit.

OK, here’s a diorama accessory for aircraft or armor, or any other idea you can come up in 1/144 scale. How about N Gauge railroading?

The product is a set of 6 metal barriers with legs and connectors, so you could make a hexagonal pen, or put 6 of them against a wall with a 2X2 setup and the wall is the 4th side.

There was a time when I wished we had those barriers for the static display aircraft at my Guard unit’s air show. In spite of the “NO SMOKING” signs prominently displayed around the aircraft, there was one guy who lit one up. Right under the wing of an F-14. Next to the fuel tank. Well, it was a shady spot. I called him on the “no smoking” rule, and he was going to put his cigarette out in the nicely provided butt can. Except this can was actually for overflowed fuel from the wing tank, and if I hadn’t physically restrained him, he would have burned himself and the aircraft. And possibly me too.

Brengun offers model builders a way to spend a few enjoyable hours assembling a pair of miniature examples of a German WWII secret weapons that never was…well, not beyond a single prototype to be accurate. Kit BRL 72013 provides two small sprues of 16 grey plastic parts, a pair of clear canopies, a very small photo-etched fret of 20 parts and a little wisp of a decal sheet that provide enough components to build a pair of Zeppelin Rammers…one more than the Germans actually had.

The Rammer (German: Rammjäger) was one of the projects for a German 'secret weapon' by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. It was designed primarily for aerial ramming against the allied bomber fleets that by 1944 were effectively leveling cities throughout Nazi Germany…and, maybe bringing the pilot back to earth breathing.

Scale Aircraft Conversions, or SAC, make replacement landing gear for a wide variety of aircraft, in all the major scales. They are cast in white metal, which is stronger than the kit’s plastic pieces. To quote the company’s website, “Some sets consist of the main gear only while others include the nose gear, tail gear and/or adjacent related components. Some inaccuracies in the original kit gear have been corrected but the mounting points remain identical to the factory parts.”

This set is made to replace the parts for Tamiya’s F-16CJ. They seem to be direct replacements for the kit parts, providing more strength and should withstand more handling during construction than the kit parts might. They’ll definitely help add to the beefy look of the later F-16 landing gear.

These are well-made parts that should be drop-in replacements. Thanks to SAC for providing the set for review and to IPMS/USA for allowing me to review it.

Of course, being made of the kind of metal they are, some parts may bend a bit during shipping. They straighten easily and are quite sturdy when assembled. Recommended.

Thanks to Brengun for providing this most excellent upgrade set for the Special Hobby AH-1G cobra; and to IPMS USA for sending it to me to review!

If you are interested in the “Snake”, the Special Hobby 1/72 kit is well worth acquiring. And you get a set of not only 2.75” rocket pods, but minigun pods as well if you don’t use them. I purchased the M-35 kit, which has the externally mounted .20MM Vulcan short-barreled cannon, and the associated saddle magazine set for it. The Hermes Program was a post WW-II American program which utilized German missile designs. Best known of this series was the Hermes A2, which was the A-4 (V-2) copy. The Hermes A1 was based on the Wasserfall, a surface to air missile developed at Peenemunde in 1942, but which never reached production. General Electric developed an built the Hermes A1, which was about ¼ the size of the Hermes A2.

The other big difference between the A1 and A2 was that the A1 had 4 extra fins on the sides of the rocket body. This was to allow greater maneuverability when the rocket was being guided to a target aircraft. The guidance was done visually during daylight and with radar assist at night. Steering from the ground was done with a joystick.

Five A1s were successfully tested at White Sands Range in New Mexico in 1950 and 51. The entire Hermes program was canceled in 1954.

Quickboost has added a pair of detailed Spitfire Mk.V cannon barrels to their aftermarket parts line that can be used to replace the ones that come in the new Airfix 1:48 scale kit. The barrels have a slightly more delicate profile than the ones in the kit and no seam lines to clean up. They also have open ends so there’s no need to break out the pin vice and # 76 drill bit. The base of the Quickboost barrels are molded to match the shape of the Airfix barrels so they will fit into the leading edge recesses as drop-in replacements. (see the comparison photo below of the Quickboost parts and the kit parts). The detail closely mirrors the kit parts, but the Quickboost barrels capture the look of the prototype with crisp and more refined recoil springs that appear less pronounced. With some adjustment, these barrels also may be used on kits other than Airfix.

The set consists of two finely cast reproductions of the F-16’s speed brakes in the extended position. Installation of the speed brakes is very straight forward once they are removed from their respective casting blocks. I labeled the gluing edge of mine with a ‘L’ and a ‘R’ as they are not interchangeable. To install each one, you will need to cut off the molded speed brakes once the fuselage halves are together. As the actuator housing for each speed brake is on the bottom of the aircraft, I removed the kit part from the bottom up by cutting at the seam on the actuator housing. As a result the top is cut off just forward of the top hinge, which is good as it gives you some space to blend in the new piece without interfering with the top hinge.

While most pictures show the speed brakes fully retracted when the jet is parked, the set looks great and will help your F-16 stand out from the crowd.

Highly recommended.

Among the French markings there is the option of finishing your model as the airplane flown by Jaqueline Auriol when she broke the feminine speed record.

If you never heard of Jaqueline Auriol, you should read about her. She was a female French aviator and test pilot. I could see no appreciable difference in the detail between the kit items and those in this set. They look to be almost exactly the same. They also have an opening on the backside of the hub with a recess that matches the locating tab on the Airfix landing gear so everything will align correctly.

The wheels are cast in a very smooth gray resin that will polish up nicely after removal from the casting block. Parts can easily be separated from the block with a razor saw or xacto blade and smoothed with sanding sticks. Because the material is resin, it will be necessary to use superglue (CA) or epoxy cement to attach the aftermarket parts to the kit’s styrene plastic landing gear legs.

Thanks to Brengun for providing this upgrade set for the Academy B-29; and to IPMS USA for sending it to me to review!

This is a very simple set which is designed for the Academy 1/72 B-29, but could also be adapted to the Airfix B-29.

Consisting of two resin Radomes, and a fret of PE antenas, this will go a long way towards improving the plastic items in the kit.

First, the Radomes. The AN/APQ-13 antenna fit were used on some B-29’s early on; the later “bathtub” radome is in the kit, and you need to check your sources before you commit to installing these radomes. The resin is flawless, with easy to remove Pour stubs. The only thing you will need to do is hold a sheet of sandpaper over the assembled model fuselage, and sand the appropriate curve into the mating surface of the radomes before installing with epoxy or superglue. Very easy.

There was no flash on this kit with lots of chrome parts.

Engine

Eighteen pieces make up the little 4 banger engine that is very well detailed with all the parts fitting extremely well.

Interior

The interior is a one piece tub that the steering column gets glued into. Very basic.

Body

The body is really small. I mean tiny, but it’s molded very well. I painted the body with HOK chrome yellow.

Chassis

The chassis glues together in 4 pieces and then the tiny little chrome parts get glued to it. Some of those chrome parts are extremely small and that made it difficult for me to put together.

Included in the kit are the tiki hut that is extremely well engraved. I used several different colors in an attempt to make the palm leaves come alive. The “Big Daddy” figure was pre-painted by Revell. The decal sheet has several Rat Fink decals that can be added to the figure.

Thanks to Aires/Quickboost for providing more of their excellent aftermarket parts for IPMS USA to review, and to IPMS leadership for sending it my way.

Quickboost has earned (rightfully) a reputation for providing just a bit more detail on a given area of a model; seats, cowlings, engines, can all be improved drastically with their parts. This is also the case with this set - control levers for the New Italeri F-104G/S.

One pour stub holds six parts: three control column boots/bases, and three control columns with much improved detail on the grip assembly. Room for error or second kits.

Thanks to Aires for providing their excellent aftermarket parts for IPMS USA to review, and to IPMS leadership for providing it to me to review.

Once more Aires improves an already great kit; in this case, the 1/32 Italeri F-104G receives an upgrade in the form of improved speed brakes.

A grand total of eight parts are provided: two speed brakes (or speed boards, or air brakes, depending on your background), two fuselage wells to place them in, two actuating rods, and two brace frame assemblies.

In the side by side comparison, Italeri has provided an acceptable speed brake well and boards. Aires has taken the kit parts, and raised the detail bar. There are rivets incorporated in the well, the frames are more delicate, and the speed brakes themselves appear to be a bit more delicate.

The new format continues to change to even more history interspersed with the modeling. The banner at the top of the cover even states "The Best for Modelling and Reference". The blue gray background are even more prevalent including the cover. The old structure and build types are gone and this concentrates more on feature articles.

The first feature article by Andy McCabe and is a test shot build of the new Revell 1/32 FW190 F-8. The finished engine OOB is awesome and detail overall is superb. The engine access panels even open to display the kits engine and all for a very reasonable price.

Richard Bolingbroke goes full bore with a two kits builds of Eduard 1/48 Hellcat series with a F6F-3 and an F6F-5. To top it off, he summarizes the wing fold kits that have been produced and uses the Wolfpack set on both to do the kits "at ease".

This kit includes resin and photoetch parts to replace the base kit engines on the Revell Monogram B-17F/G kits. The Brassin engines have extremely fine detail, go together well, but require experience with resin and photoetch pieces. The engines add fantastic detail to the base kits and are a challenging but rewarding build.

This kit is the iconic Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9 American radial engine developed by Curtiss-Wright, and widely used on aircraft in the 1930s through 1950s. These kit engines are replacements for the parts supplied with the Revell Monogram B-17F/G aircraft kits.

Overview

The F9F-8 Cougar was a carrier based early swept wing jet that was light, fast and had good range and load carrying capacity. It was developed from the F9F Panther which was a straight wing jet. The operational career for the F9F was 1951 to 1974. It was also used as a photo recon and two seat trainer.

The Kit

Kitty Hawks 1/48 scale F9F Cougar is the first 1/48 kit since the Revell kit and a couple resin kits of the 60s and 70s. It seems the Cougar has been like the red headed stepchild of the model world. That has changed now that Kitty Hawk has the F9F-8T trainer and the F9F-8 and -8P Cougars.

Dana Bell has proven over and over again to be one of the best authors when it comes down to aircraft details. This book is yet another testament to that.

This volume covers the “raised canopy” version of the Corsair, or the definitive WWII version of the Corsair: the -1A, -1C and -1D, plus the British and New Zealand versions as well.

The first few pages of the book have a short (too short if I might say) description of the raised canopy airframes, their main systems and differences with the birdcage and within the A/C/D versions.

It also includes a list of every serial number, changes to the airframes within each serial number ranges and manufacturers. This list could be the ultimate source of information for the modeler that wants to ensure his/her model will be an exact replica of a given tail number.

Considered by many to be the most famous aircraft used by the Japanese in World War II, the Zero is the subject of hundreds of books. And yet, with all of the information already available on the A6M this book, illustrated and authored by Artur Juszczak will make an excellent addition to your research library.

The advertising literature for this publication indicates that drawings and data have been pulled from original technical manuals, with dimensional details and images gathered from surviving airframes located in museums. These pictures and details cover the aircraft inside and out.

I found that the advertising for this book was quite accurate. The images are outstanding and will prove very helpful to the modeler, showing interior and exterior colors, color demarcation lines. The book goes far beyond what one would expect after having read the advertising.

History

Here is a little history about farm horse drawn wagons. Four-wheeled vehicles have many names – one for heavy loads is most commonly called a wagon.

Wagons can be pulled by donkeys, ponies or mules and other smaller animals are occasionally used, such as large dogs, llamas and goats. Heavy wagons, carts and agricultural implements can also be pulled by other large draught animals such as oxen, water buffalo, yaks or even camels and elephants.

Vehicles pulled by a pair (or by a team of several pairs) have a pole which attaches between the wheel pair.

Kit

The kit is produced by HauleraulerHauler, a European company who in partnership with Brengun produce a wide range of kits. They produce construction kits, universal kits, photoetch parts in a variety scales to accentuate other manufactured kits. The box artwork shows a photo of an assembled farm horse drawn wagon.

Trumpeter has released the M1082 trailer, which is a welcome addition to military vehicles and dioramas alike.

The kit includes over 180 parts on 5 sprues (1 clear), plus a small PE fret and a plastic string, likely to make tie downs for a tarp -which is not provided-. Decals are provided for two finishes: tri-color “european/Nato” and a sand/desert one.

Construction follows the typical breakdown of most vehicles, that is, it starts with the frame. Careful alignment of the parts at this stage will pay off latter. Construction them moves to the trailer bed itself and finally to the wheels (with tires provided in rubber). It also includes a trailer jack foot, which would allow the trailer to be shown on its own.

Mirror Models has released a full plastic kit of the Artillery Tractor T-20, which saw service with the Finnish, German and Russian and Romanian Armies (Decals provided for the first 3 armies).

This kit has over 450 plastic parts and it includes some small PE details. The tracks are of the “individual link” style. I don’t think they will “click” to each other; rather glue should be used in each link.

The kit includes a complete engine, engine bay, firewall and transmission. There is no “hull”, it is built from individual pieces, and so careful alignment there will be needed. Once the engine and engine bay plus basic hull is completed, assembly moves into the interior, with nicely detailed seats for the artillery gun crew.
