Originally designed as a pure air superiority machine to replace the multi-role F-4 Phantom II, the Eagle has since morphed into one of the most technologically advanced fighter-bombers in its class: the Strike Eagle. First taking to the air in 1972 and entering service in 1976, around 1600 F-15s have been built for six air forces around the world. Fast and agile but also large and expensive, only the wealthiest nations could afford the F-15. With almost 40 years of combat operations to its credit, the Eagle has been at the very sharp end since entering service. The Cold War saw the Eagle as the… more |

F-16A Air Defence FighterPublished:
Federico Anselmino is the author of several books dealing with modern Italian Air Force aircraft. Introduction - Page 1The F-16 was chosen by the Italian Air Force as a "gap filler" until the F-2000 Typhoon became available as a replacement for the aging Fleet of F-104 Starfighters. Initially a lease was signed to acquire 20 single seat Tornado F.3 and four F.3T Tornados to supplement 60 F-104S/ASA.. This decision was motivated by logistical, economical and political reasons. Although a superior aircraft to the F-104 the Tornado was a more costly aircraft to fly and maintain. In order to conserve funds the Itialian Air force ended the contract with the RAF and chose the F-16 "Fighting Falcon; ADF to protect Italian skies. The ownership of the F-16's flown by… more |

Panther Medium Tank IV. SS Panzerkorps Eastern Front 1944Published:
During the summer of 1944 a series of massive Soviet offensives threatened to destroy the entire German army on the Eastern Front. As the Wehrmacht scrambled to hold what ground it could many formations simply disappeared and the available armored units were used to plug the gaps in the front line. One of the most important elements of the defense was the newly raised IV.SS-Panzerkorps which contained the veteran Totenkopf and Wiking divisions. Although both were well equipped their real striking power lay in the battalion of Pzkpfw V Panther tanks with which each was outfitted, perhaps the most effective armored fighting vehicle produced by Germany during the Second World War. In Dennis Oliver's latest volume in the TankCraft series, he uses archive photos and extensively… more |
