The Eduard Bf-108 has been around for some time and recently re-released. This little gem of a kit is a fun build and a very nice model.

There are limitations to things that you can do in plastic. In this instance the fine trailing edge of the prop blade can’t get be thinned enough. Well resin allows you to do a lot of things that plastic won’t. That is where this resin prop from Brassin comes in.

Packaged in a vacuformed container this set contains two pieces of resin. The resin is cast in light grey resin with no defects noted. The parts are the actual propeller blade and the nose cap. The key is the way Eduard casts their parts. I’ve found it to be very easy to remove and clean up.

There is also a sheet of decals for the prop blade logos.

The set is simple to add just drill a 2mm hole in the kit back plate and add the prop by threading the nose cap through the prop.

This has got to be the best time to be a modeler of modern Russian aircraft. I remember as a helicopter pilot in the Cold War, it was virtually impossible to find photos of aircraft let alone weapons systems. Advanced Modeling is the latest from the Russian manufacturers to represent missiles and bombs. This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to review this company’s products. All I can say is wow!

The F-14 has no shortage of kits in 1/48th scale and with the impending release coming from Tamiya the Tomcat will likely become a more popular model on the tables. The Tomcat is not a stranger to colorful markings. Furball Aero-Design has released another great sheet for the Tomcat.

The Air Wing All-Stars Part One has options for seven F-14As, all of them colorful. Typical of Furball decals the decals are sealed in a large ziplock bag. Inside the bag are the instructions printed in full color on three sheets of 8.5x11 high quality print stock. These instructions are easy enough to follow with no issues noted. All the aircraft have profile views of the left side and where there are differences between sides this is noted. Plan views are included on a side to themselves. The final sheet is designed just for the stencils and will be a great reference for the modeler.

I really like decals that represent historic moments in time and Iliad has released a set that is right up this alley with decals to represent four of the C-47’s that participated in the Berlin Airlift in 1/72nd scale. There are several kits available including Airfix and Italeri.

Inside the package, you get a single double sided sheet covering all the profiles of the planes which include:

  • Fassberg Flyer
  • C-47 in OD/Gray from Templehof
  • C-47 of European Air Transport Services in dull natural metal
  • C-47 from BOAC

The sheet has a very detailed description of the plane, its paint schemes and the details of its service. The back side of the page has top and bottom profiles describing the color of control surfaces and other details such as deicing boots. The decals are on a sheet with superb printing and include enough decals to do all four planes.

Quickboost

The latest offering from Quickboost provides a one-piece supercharger intake. Packaged in a self-sealing package with a card stock support, this light grey resin intake is perfectly formed. The kit would have you build up the intake from two pieces meaning you’d have to fill the seam and then lose the raised welded detail Quickboost takes care of that for you. The inlet is deep enough to be convincing.

This time saver is worth the small price charged. The shape is accurate and all the detail is there with very little work. It is a drop in replacement for the kit parts. Simple, inexpensive, minimal work and accurate, all the hallmarks of the Quickboost line. This is another winner from them.

Highly recommended

On the heels of the Aggressor unit, 65th FG, being disbanded the aircraft were farmed out to various units. One of those units that acquired the ‘used’ aggressor aircraft was the 194th FS in Fresno, CA. They traded in their F-16Cs for F-15s. The aircraft retained their aggressor paint schemes until they were repainted in the Mod Eagle scheme.

This sheet is contained in a ziplock bag. There are two full color pages printed on high quality paper in full color. The side view profiles are on the first page. This gives you the color callouts for three aircraft, one Mod Eagle, one in Flanker paint scheme, and one in Desert Eagle paint. The paint cross references for all three aircraft are included.

The other three sides of the instructions show the upper and lower plan views. Each aircraft has the color callout and cross reference with Testors, Humbrol, Gunze and Xtracrylic paint ranges.

Sometime back in 2015 it was announced that ICM was going to produce a new 1/48 Ju-88 series kit. I was rather intrigued as the Ju-88 is one of my favorite aircraft of WWII and that the last time I actually built a Ju-88 was an old Hobbycraft kit back in the late 1980’s. Then sometime in the early 1990’s a new model company DML, later Dragon, came onto the market with a whole series of the Ju-88 family. At the time these were top notch kits but some of the engineering in order to produce a wide variety of variants made things slightly complicated for some, myself included. So with this announcement of a new Ju-88 kit coming out I was excited but at the same time very reluctant as my past experience with ICM not being favorable.

Russian 1/72nd scale modelers rejoice. There are some superior parts available for your aircraft. Advanced Modeling used actual blueprints and prototypes to render these miniature gems in 3D CAD. This set is designed to replicate the bomb rack used on ground attack aircraft holding 250kg bombs.

The packaging is in a self-sealing bag that contains the parts for two racks, with parts contained in two separate self-sealing bags. There is even a small decal sheet for those that have Optivisors, as these decals are small.

The instructions are beautifully printed and attached to card-stock packaging. They are written in Russian and English. The drawings are simply beautiful and extremely accurate. The one sheet shows where the decals go.

Thanks to Ross at SAC for yet another outstanding metal gear set. IPMS USA continues to appreciate the support! In this case, I purchased the gear, because I really needed it.

This set is, again, a simple drop-in replacement gear for the new 1/32 Italeri F-104C. This is the logical follow-on kit to the previously released F-104G/S, and this kit is great. A bit expensive, but the decal sheets are huge Cartograf items with several options. The basic plastic and the few add-ons like the gear was worth my money.

The SAC set contains the entire main gear beam strut area as one unitary item, and a nose gear. Both are perfectly cast and directly upgrade the kit parts.

Installation is easy. Use superglue and press the SAC gear in place. They fit perfectly, and impress with strength and “peace of mind” when attaching wheels/tires to the axles.

AOA Decals

Contained inside a ziplock baggie is a sheet of high quality, high viz, full color stencils for the A-4 Skyhawk. With the Hasegawa and Hobbycraft kits on the market the need for quality decals cannot be overstated.

These decals from AOA Decals are perfectly in register. Even though the one star and bars looks deformed it is perfectly correct. It is designed to fit over the inflight refueling boom. That is the attention to detail that you get with AOA Decals.

The decals themselves are printed by Cartograf so you know they are the best in the world. They are thin and in perfect register with good color saturation. There are plenty of variations for some of the common stencils. So you’ll have to check your references. The sheet is about 5.5 x 9 inches and contains markings to do a single Skyhawk.

The decals are applicable to the early A-4A, B, C/L and E. They also cover the A-4F and M.

Sincere appreciation to Eduard for providing IPMS USA yet another review item, and to the IPMS reviewer corps leaders for sending it to me!

This set is part of Eduard’s expanding range of aftermarket accessories to use on various aircraft. In this case, you receive four missile bodies with aft fins already cast in place, a set of forward fins (16 total), and four clear resin seeker heads. Also included is a set of resin ground-protective end caps which can be placed over the seeker heads, and a decal sheet to handle all four missiles. There is also a brass etched set of missile nozzles.

A word on the detail: FANTASTIC! These are the first AIM-9’s I’ve noted that have all three rail mounts in place between the fins; the rollerons are extremely well done, and the rest of the missile looks the part.

The Aggressors are used to simulate potential enemy aircraft. The 65th Aggressor Squadron painted up their aircraft to visually look like the enemy aircraft. In this case they took on the look of the Su-27.

The decals and instructions are included in a zip lock bag. The instructions are included on a double-sided 8.5 x 11 high quality paper. Both sides of the four aircraft are shown. On the front of the instructions are the left and right side with the individual aircraft peculiarity. As is typical of the level of research that Two Bobs does the instructions give you the FS numbers of the paint scheme and the modifications necessary to make your kit accurate. The back of the instructions gives the color cross-reference for Testors, Humbrol, Gunze and Xtracrylic.

Among several integrated sets of Model Air paints produced by Vallejo for common AFV camouflage schemes is their U.S. Olive Drab set, consisting of four color paints, an Olive Drab Primer and a clear Satin Varnish.

Opening the box reveals a vacuform tray holding six half-size (quarter ounce) bottles, each one holding slightly less than half as much paint as one of Vallejo’s standard bottles. The assumption is that the paint set would be one-stop shop, with enough paint for (at least) single project, although my experience with Vallejo paints is that this set could easily be stretched across three or four normal-sized 1/35th scale builds.

This time around it is the Flakpanzer T-34(r), a combination of the Soviet T-34 tank hull, and the four-barreled German 2cm Flakvierling 38. To complete the conversion, the kit includes a selection of extra parts, such as the turret, to produce an accurate replica of this fascinating late-war vehicle. An array of photo-etched parts and Magic track links are also included to enhance the detail.

The Sea King has been a mainstay helicopter for many navy and army services around the world. The subject of this model is the British Navy HC.4 Commando. The scheme I chose was a bird from 848 Naval Air Squadron, Commando Helicopter Force, Yeovilton in England 2011. The British Sea Kings are in the process of being withdrawn from service, as of March 2016.

This kit is the new mold from Airfix, and the small box is packed full of sprues, decal sheet and instruction book. There are several options that include extended or stowed main rotor blades and tail assembly, open or closed doors, and two markings to choose from. A small electric motor (purchased separately from Airfix) can be installed. Some modification within the cabin is needed, but everything is clearly illustrated. I did consider the motor, but chose to fold everything up for something different. There are some spare parts left over, including a different sand filter.

Sometimes considered as the most effective variant, the Model 52 was developed to again shorten the wings to increase speed and dispense with the folding wing mechanism. In addition, ailerons, aileron trim tab and flaps were revised. Produced first by Mitsubishi, most Model 52s were made by Nakajima. The prototype was made in June 1943 by modifying an A6M3 and was first flown in August 1943. The first Model 52 is said in the handling manual to have 製造番号 (seizō bangō, or production number) 3904, which apparently refers to the prototype.

Research by Mr. Bunzo Komine published by Mr. Kenji Miyazaki states that aircraft 3904 through 4103 had the same exhaust system and cowl flaps as on the Model 22. This is partially corroborated by two wrecks researched by Mr. Stan Gajda and Mr. L. G. Halls, production number 4007 and 4043, respectively. (The upper cowling was slightly redesigned from that of the Model 22.)
