This book covers the Northrop YF-23 which was in competition with the F-22 for the ATF contract. The book is written by the chief test pilot of the Yf-23 program and the in-depth knowledge of the author really shows in the book. While the F-22 was chosen many, including myself consider the YF-23 the more aesthetically pleasing of the two designs.

Ginter books are well known in both the modeling and aviation community for their in-depth photo coverage and history of the title subject. This book, number 220 in the Air Force legend series lives up to the sterling reputation established by all of the previous volumes. Being a more modern subject, the book is overflowing with color photos.

The book begins with an overview of the development of stealth technology and the various concept designs from companies and how they impacted the YF-23 program. Next, the author covers the development of the YF-23 and preparation for the test flight and flight program. Derivatives are also discussed, including a story of how Northrup-Grumman’s silence on their proposals design for these additional proposals was broken in 2005 only because a display model was stolen from the El Segundo factory and placed for sale on eBay!

Design details, as well as cockpit and systems, are also covered. The lovely color cockpit photos will help you detail out your model’s cockpit to whatever level of detail you desire. As will all of the other detail photos of the weapons bay, landing gear and bays, flight controls and all external sections. These section photos are what Ginter books are known for and what many modelers have depended on to “get it right”!

The book concludes with where the two prototypes are now, all of the pilots that flew the YF-23 and the patches and insignias for the program. Lastly, there is the modeling section showing every kit available from 1/144 to 1/32 scale with a brief review of each model.

I really like this book and the entire Air Force Legends/ Naval Fighters series by Ginter books! They are essential for any modeler who wants to super detail their model and to a good overall aviation library. The author’s intimate knowledge of the aircraft and program as Chief Pilot really adds to this book. I can heartily recommend this book as well (as the entire Ginter series) to anyone with an interest in building a YF-23 or in aviation history!
