This is the second book in this series that I have had the pleasure of reviewing, the first being for the RMS Titanic. The reader is presented both with history of the airframe type and the basic knowledge to safely start, operate and maintain an F-86A Sabre.

This book begins with the story of the Sabre’s development and testing. Next is a good overview of the Sabre’s combat history. Then the reader gets into the main body of the book. This covers the restoration, operation and repair of the world’s only flying F-86A. The book then concludes with a listing of principal production variants and surviving airframes.

The true gem of this book is the many color photographs that populate its pages. There are many color photos from the Sabre’s combat in Korea and later operations. The multitude of color detail photos will be of great benefit to the modeler. This book combines narrative history with a “walk around” type and beyond photo essay of the Sabre that is presented in a most enjoyable manner. The author is Chief Pilot for Golden Apple Operations, the owners and operators of F-86A 48-178 based at Duxford in the United Kingdom. His in-depth knowledge and love of the aircraft comes through in his writing.

The book will appeal to the aviation historian, aircraft buff, and general modeler and super-detailer alike. I really liked this book and recommend it to all who have an interest in the F-86. I will also add my recommendation for any of the other Haynes workshop manuals for ships, starships and aircraft. Our thanks to Zenith Press for this sample and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review it.
