F-14A VF-111 "Sundowners" Decals
Thanks to HAD (based in Budapest, Hungary) for sending IPMS/USA this decal sheet. This was the first time I have used their products and I was impressed. When I went to their website, I noticed the Digital Camo products as well. The web site lists many different decal sets for other aircraft and is worth visiting.
The decals I volunteered to work are for the popular “Good Golly Miss Molly” VF-111 CAG F-14A (Late). The set contains a basic sheet with the specialized markings, as well as a correction sheet - for a rescue arrow and white blocks (no lettering) for the Ejection warning triangles.
The basic sheet worked very well. The decals were resilient to handling, thin, and settled on to gloss paint with no silvering. Color registration was excellent. The MODEX and other lettering was properly spaced. Tail flashes had the yellow surround of the red with no registration issues. They settled down onto the fins with no problems as did the dorsal fin markings, and the shark mouth. After applying the decals, I used a gloss coat and then used tape to see how well the adhesive worked. There was no problem with the decals lifting off.
One disappointing part was the previously mentioned correction sheet for the warning triangles - where lettering with the word “Danger” would have been in white, there were only triangles of three rectangles. I put them on the model to see how they worked, and it was fine, but in 1/48 scale the rectangles were noticeable in their lack of lettering.
The remainder of the sheet looked good. You will need to use kit or other decals for maintenance stencils.
If you have a desire to do the aircraft with this marking option, I recommend this sheet.
Thanks again to HAD for the review item, and thanks to IPMS/USA for providing it for me to review!
