Want an easy upgrade to the AMK 1/48 MiG-31 Foxhound? Step right up to the new Quickboost MiG-31 airbrakes pistons set that provides a beautiful replacement to what is supplied in the kit. The parts are packaged in the standard Quickboost re-closable packaging with a paper stiffener along with the description card. These parts are specific to fit the AMK highly detailed 1/48 MiG-31 Foxhound injected plastic kits. They may also work for the Hobby Boss Foxhound kit, but I only have AMK kits to compare to. This appears to be a re-release of the Aires 4722 Speed Brakes kit that was released earlier, only now without the actual replacement speed brakes.

Quickboost has molded the airbrake pistons perfectly in light tan resin with no apparent bubbles. Quickboost has provided two airbrake pistons, enough for one kit. There are no instructions, but this set is a simple replacement of the kit parts. You may ask: what is wrong with the kit parts? Take a look at the pictures below. The first comparison photograph shows the AMK part in grey plastic and the Quickboost part in tan resin. You can see that the mold seams have been removed in the Quickboost part, but wait, look at the second comparison picture. Here is where the Quickboost part brings home the bacon. The most obvious correction is the absence of the ejection pin mark, but you can also see that the AMK part is basically smooth on this side as opposed to the Quickboost part. You may also notice the second ejector pin mark on the upper AMK part. Unless you want to fill in the ejection pin mark and replace the ridges. That is where this Quickboost set shines.

Although most paints will adhere to resin alone, I would recommend that you wash the parts to remove any remaining mold release and prime them first. They will need to be installed with your favorite CA (super glue) or epoxy, as the normal plastic glues or solvents will not react with the resin.

This product is a good way to enhance your AMK 1/48 MiG-31 Foxhound and well worth the time and cost. This product is highly recommended due to the superior appearance of the Quickboost parts over the injected kit parts.

Thanks to Aires Hobby Models and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review this set.
