MiG-21SMT Interior Set
There is no doubt that the Eduard MiG-21 family of kits sets the standard for this aircraft. The SMT variant is the ground attack version of the MiG-21. While the kit cockpit is nice and quite usable, there is room for improvement. I think it is nice that the manufacturer of the kit actually designs an aftermarket replacement set. This ensures that the resin will fit perfectly.
Inside a very sleek looking cardboard box, you are greeted by the six page color instructions. The drawings are quite impressive and should present no big problem. Below the instructions you see protective foam. This will ensure that the resin pieces will not move around and get damaged.
The resin pieces are contained in six small plastic ziplock bags, with the major items being packaged separately. The resin is light grey resin with no imperfections that I could find. The detail is exquisite. The cockpit tub is really nice with some great detail on the side walls. The setup is quite unique, with the detail being highlighted with pre-painted PE parts. The ejection seat is quite nice with some really fine undercuts. There is also a clear piece of resin for the HUD. To go with this, there are some masks for the HUD that will help during the construction and painting.
This is an Eduard set, so you know there is photoetch. In this case, there are two frets of PE. One is the pre-painted variety that I absolutely love. There is detail pre-painted on these pieces that I could not replicate with a paint brush. I am a definite supporter of pre-painted parts. The other fret is mostly the canopy framing. This will be the most difficult part of the construction, bending the canopy framing to fit the clear parts.
The entire presentation exudes quality from the packaging to the PE to the resin pieces. I’m not sure there is anything else you can add to this set to make it better. If you want a perfect companion to the excellent Eduard MiG-21SMT, look no further. This is as good as it gets.
Highly recommended.
Thanks to Eduard and IPMS/USA for the review copy.
