The Squadron Signal “In Action” series has been around for many years and is well liked by modelers and vehicle historians alike. This newest volume concentrates on the German heavy armored cars used throughout World War II. The title may be a little deceiving as it only addresses the heavies and not the smaller light armored cars. This volume does, however, look at all the heavy armored cars from the early war Sd.Kfz. 231 6-wheeled vehicle to the late war Sd.Kfz. 234 series of 8-wheeled vehicles. There is minimal text, which mostly serves to introduce the different variants. There are no technical drawings in this issue but there is an abundance of “in action” photographs, each of which has a descriptive caption. Several of the images are closeup shots that show plenty of details of the vehicles featured. This volume has 80 pages and over 200 B & W photographs. The only color illustrations are on the front and back covers. Unlike the earlier In Action series, there are no color side views of the vehicles included. All the photographs are of outstanding quality. The book does include a few charts of the vehicle specifications but text is mostly limited to the captions. The one place this book falls short is that there are no interior shots of the vehicles. I would image the only reason for that is that there are none available. Otherwise, I am sure that David would have had some in there.

This volume is in the new format that has a glued spine as opposed to the stapled spine. I prefer this format. It is similar to the newer Walk Around series and has the title printed on the spine. This makes searching your reference stash much easier. If you are like I am and have several of the In Action series, it was always a pain searching through all the volumes. Now, with the title printed on the spine, it makes searching your reference stash a breeze.

I have a few different books on German armored cars. Unfortunately, these are all really old and out of print and they concentrate on only one variant of armored car. With this new volume, the author has brought together in one title all the different variants of the German armored cars. This is a welcome volume and helps fill a void in vehicle research.

David Doyle is almost as prolific an author as Steve Zaloga. Once again, he has graced us with his knowledge of armored fighting vehicles. I am hoping he continues the series and gives us a new volume on the light 4-wheeled armored cars. This is a welcome volume in the In Action series and I highly recommend it. Like several of their newer releases, Squadron also has this volume available in a hardbound edition.
