A trend, among scale model manufacturers, is producing their own line of paints. Others (AK, Vallejo, etc.) have been packaging their paints in sets geared toward finishing a specific model. ICM Holding has positioned themselves by not only manufacturing the kits but also providing their own line of paints to finish said model. Which brings us to a recent acrylic paint set from ICM Holding, item number 3058-American Cars of the Early 20th Century.

This acrylic paint set includes six bottles. The 12ml bottles of colors included in this set are: Grass Green, Extra Dark Green, Deep Blue, Olive Green. There is an additional 12ml bottle of Varnish Gloss and a 17ml bottle of Primer Black.

The paints are a bit on the thick side but can be diluted with water or ICM Holding thinner (sold separately). ICM recommends that you dilute these paints with a 40-60% solution of water to paint. The paint thickness threw me off for a bit, but I got better. I did not have any spoons, so I just used the paints on an ICM kit of the Model A. I airbrushed the Primer Black on the chassis and lower body. The primer paint goes on well. I needed several coats, but that was me not getting the dilution right and not a fault of the paints. I did not try diluting these paints with thinner. There are other reviews where reviewers did not report any adverse issues using different thinners.

The main body of the Model A was brush painted Grass Green. Full coverage took three or four coats, but I was pretty aggressive with thinning the paint with water. Way more water than was necessary. The paint covered beautifully and flowed into all the nooks and crannies. Brush marks did disappear as the paint dried. The only blemishes were of my doing from the liberal application of water and a hurried approach of painting.

The clear vanish I airbrushed and does the job beautifully. The clear coat went on without any muss or fuss.

These acrylic paints from ICM Holding do the job very well.

My thanks to ICM Holding and IPMS/USA for the review sample.
