MiG-15 Landing Gear
The SAC product provides four parts to replace the Trumpeter landing gear. The kit part number for the recommended Trumpeter kit are part numbers 7, 14, 15, and 16.
Part 14 is the nose wheel strut, which is the gear strut and the starboard side of the wheel fork. This is molded as a single piece.
Part 7 is the port side of the wheel fork, which is a separate piece and must be glued to the nose wheel strut (Part 14) “trapping” the nose wheel in the wheel fork.
Part 15 and 16 are the starboard and port main gear struts. Like the gear in the Trumpeter kit, the SAC main gear struts are molded as single pieces. One needs only to attach the tires to complete the “gear”.
Of significance is the fact that the SAC gear strut locating pins are of the same shape and size as the locating pins on the Trumpeter kit. This is, of course, important so that proper fit and alignment can be easily achieved when using the SAC gear.
The SAC gear are without any noticeable flash. The molding is clean, with sharp edges where required and nicely rounded contours matching the Trumpeter parts.
An advantage that SAC gear possess over kit parts is that they will not “break”. Trust me, I’m an expert when it comes to breaking landing gear and I’ve performed a large number of “root canals” on those broken bits, using a length of wire glued into holes drilled in the broken parts, to align those parts properly when gluing them back together. While SAC parts can be bent, they won’t break. And if one bends the SAC part it is an easy job to simply bend it back into its proper shape. (Again, I’m an expert at having to do so.)
Two MiG-15 kits were available to for comparison to the SAC gear. The Trumpeter MiG-15 UTI Midget, Kit # 02805 and the Tamiya MiG-15 bis, Kit # 61043. The SAC gear parts can be used on either kit with success although SAC does indicate that they are designed specifically for the Trumpeter kit. But then, I tend not to pay attention to instructions and after my research, comparing the SAC parts, side by side, with both the Tamiya and Trumpeter kits, I have no issue with using the SAC parts on either kit.
I highly recommend the SAC gear for their durability, ease of use, and excellent appearance when in place. Thanks to SAC for providing this review sample.
