AMMO by Mig Jimenez

For anyone painting WWII US Paratrooper figures, Ammo by Mig has delivered with a new set of acrylic paints in their Figures set to make finding your colors easier. The set includes six colors (Yellow Green, Khaki Grey, Green Violet, Light Ochre, Buff, and Military Green), which will take care of the uniforms, web gear, and helmets. I find the Figures Set paints to be a little thicker than the standard Ammo colors, which aids in applying them with a paint brush. I would highly recommend this set to any modeler or figure painter that is working on US paratroopers of this era.

Cozmic Scale Models
Scale

MSRP
$20.70

Cozmic Scale Models has created a set of Raptor Pilots in 32nd scale that can be used to “crew” a Battlestar Galactica Raptor. There are two sets of the Raptor pilot figures, one with the crew wearing their flight helmets, and the set being reviewed, not wearing their helmets. The helmets are, however included in this set. It is not intended to have these two figures wearing their headgear, and in fact, the helmets cannot be placed on the figures unless some surgery is done to the helmets. No worries, though. There is a set of these figures, with helmets being worn, if that is your interest.

Monroe Purdue Studios

$5.00

Monroe Perdu Studios has been in existence since 2001. They specialize in both resin (notably Zimmerit sheets) and laser cut kits for diorama and architectural-subject builders. Offered in various scales, their laser cut kits provide some unique structures (chapel, farmhouse, etc.) as well as more than a few diorama accessory items (church pew, wheelbarrow, wooden scooters, etc.) that could easily find a home in your next project.

One such item is a kit of two wooden rocking horse. The laser cut parts for the two different styles of rocking horses come on a small sheet of thin cardboard. Don't let the nature of that material put you off, the assembled 'horsies' couldn't be sturdier.

Perusing the website of Monroe Purdue Studios (MPS), out of Simi Valley CA, will uncover a variety of unusual modeling products, including a growing set of very affordable laser-cut wood sets, among a lot of other interesting items. Visiting their booth at the 2021 Las Vegas IPMS Nationals, I looked at a dozen or so build-ups in various stages of completion, demonstrating the uniqueness of their products. I came home with two sets; a 1/35th scale laser-cut wood French Wine Crates set for cases of wine (the subject of this review), and a complete zimmerit set for the 1/35th scale HobbyBoss King Tiger II (the subject of a separate IPMS review).

ICM
Scale
1/24
MSRP
$25.00

ICM has released kit of a British Policeman in the standard on the beat uniform.

In the box is:

  • 2 x light grey sprues
  • 1 stand base
  • 1 black sprue
  • 1 instruction sheets
  • 1 box art print

Construction

The construction of the figure is very easy and they assemble very well. You do need to do a little filling here and there during the assembly.

The Base is a nice touch and has optional ground finishes to choose from.

Painting was easy, although I did not use all the reference colors as shown on in the instructions. I did use all Tamiya paints with the shoes and helmet strap being done using Semi Gloss black, the main uniform was Rubber black as this is closer to the uniform color at this scale. The Silver was replaced with Chrome. The finish I feel is better using these colors.

I really enjoyed building these and they look great as a team of individually.

Hauler
Scale

MSRP
$11.39

Hauler is known as a supplier of high-quality detail parts for aircraft, as well as other subjects. Once painted the fuel barrels provide a very nice addition to any diorama.

Package Contents

2 sets of resin containing the fuel barrels, with each set containing 6 barrels.

Instructions

The barrels are molded in resin and there are no instructions contained or needed in the kit.

Painting

The first thing I did was to wash the resin barrels in soapy water to remove any residue that may be on the pieces.

I decided for ease of handling that I would leave the barrels on their resin sprue.

I started painting the barrels by first applying Stynlreyz, light gray. I then decided that I would “paint” the barrels with AK weathering pencils.

ICM

ICM continues with its fascinating series of Chernobyl “instant dioramas” with the latest being a scene depicting the evacuation of civilians from the threatened region around the power plant disaster. In this case, five figures are provided, along with an apartment balcony, a small pot and a printed background to bring it all together.

The figures include one older gentleman, a young man and woman, and a somewhat matronly mother with young daughter. All are excellently sculpted and show lots of individual character along with natural poses. If there is any objection to the sculpting, it’s that none of the figures display the level of abject terror that I, personally, would be undergoing if such a thing were happening to me. In fact, all of the poses appear to be relatively relaxed. Maybe no one really knew what was happening.

ICM has finally filled a big gap in their ongoing World War 1 Infantry series by releasing a set of early-war Belgian Infantry. Unlike most of the previous sets which displayed figures advancing toward an unseen enemy, this set displays Belgian infantry in what must be the most iconic fashion for the period depicted – fighting from a defensive position.

The set includes three infantry figures in the traditional shakos, all crouching or kneeling, two actively firing their rifles and one cocking or reloading his weapon. It also includes an officer figure armed with sword and pistol. The set includes two sprues of equipment suitable for Belgian infantry from 1914 all the way to 1918, when they wore khaki uniforms with helmets.

Danger Close Dioramics
Scale

MSRP
$23.90

With the loss of the famous Verlinden line of diorama accessories, other small manufacturers have been stepping in to fill the void. Danger Close Dioramics is one such company, with a line of nineteen products as of the time of this writing. Their “factory gate” accessory is one such product, consisting of six dark grey, non-porous resin pieces which, when assembled, make a diorama backdrop piece about ten inches in length.

Danger Close Dioramics

Danger Close Dioramics is a relative newcomer to the area of diorama accessories, but they seem to be expanding their offerings at a good pace. The subject of this review in their Buddha Temple in 1/53th, which features a statue, base with steps, background wall and 1 side wall. DCD also includes several strips of bamboo-like plastic that can be used to enhance the scene if one wishes.

All resin parts are molded in a fairly dark gray ono-porous material which, although not bubble-free, is still relatively clean. All items in this set were clearly cast from open-face molds, so that back sides are not particularly pristine, with some overfill as well as some underfill with a certain amount of resin “cupping” along the edges. This does mean, however, that there are no casting blocks to remove.
