British Royal Engineers

Published:
Company: MiniArt

This set consists of 4 figures all conducting land mine removal.

The figures come on two sprues with 67 parts, the bulk of which are the odds and ends that the soldiers are carrying. The box art and instructions on the back of the box show the figures as completed. The first figure is using a probe to find mines, the second is digging with a spade, the third is removing (or placing) a mine, and the fourth is using a mine detector. The poses are well done and depict a reasonable amount of action.

The set had very minimal flash and no ejection pin marks. What mold lines that were there were easily removed with a sharp blade. There are no decals and the painting instructions are just for the major items. You will need to copy what you see in the illustration or consult your… more

Soviet 122mm Ammunition

Published:
Company: MiniArt

This kit consists of a set of 122mm ammunition and their transportation crates. Included in the kit are 6 identical sprues with one set of decals for the markings on both the ammo and the crates. You can make either a BR-471 APHE shell and its corresponding crate or OF-471 High Explosive fragmentation shell and its crate. You can make all of one type or a mixture of both. I built 3 of each type.

The construction of the crates is fairly straightforward. There are two sequences to follow according to which type of shell you want to build. I followed the instructions exactly on the first crate and found it was not as easy as I had expected. So I changed the sequence as follows:

I used Tamiya Thin cement to glue the side and end parts to the base. This gives you a few minutes… more

Soviet Medium Tank T-34/76 Mod 1943 (Snap-fit)

Published:
Company: Zvezda

This kit is listed as “My First Model Kit” and I wanted to get my grandson into modeling, so I thought this should be a good kit to introduce the hobby to my just turned 6 grandson. Well, things did not go as I had hoped. There are no age recommendations on the box, but most of the other kits on the shelf state 8 years old or older even for the snap tight kits. Now I know why. My grandson’s fine motor skills were not developed enough to handle a sprue cutter and his attention span was not long enough even to handle this kit (from start to finish no more than 2 hours). So I ended up finishing the model myself and getting him introduced to the painting and decal portion of the project. Below is listed what was done and how:

Step 1. In this step the tow cable… more

Stu.Pz. IV Brummbar Early Production with Zimmerit

Published:
Company: Dragon Models

Most Dragon models today are a collection of old sprues and new sprues added to create a new kit variant. In this case, Dragon has done so and in this case, redid the areas that had zimmerit applied. This being said, you have many options that need to be reviewed and decided on before you start this kit.

Steps 1, 2, & 3 - Lower Hull

As with most armor kits, the first step is the running gear. Remember those choices I mentioned in the paragraph above, well, here is the first one. You have a choice of two slightly different drive sprockets. The second choice is between the end caps over the bogie springs, and the third is the choice of mufflers.

The instructions give you two sets of muffler and you will need to drill out some locating holes… more

Panzerspahwagen BA-64[r] w/Crew

Published:
Company: MiniArt

This kit is a re-box of the Vision model 35002 WWII Russian BA-64 Armored Car with new decals to depict a captured armored car in German service. Plus the addition of a MiniArt figure set that calls them the “crew”.

Step

  1. is the assembly of the transmission with the gearshift levers in place and painting it a steel color.
  2. builds the frame and adds the transmission. There were no general painting instructions such as “if no color is called out paint the part the overall base color”. You need to prime and paint the frame before attaching the transmission, or do a lot of masking.
  3. is the adding of the drive shafts and axles.
  4. adds very small bolt heads to the lower hull. There are large ejector pin marks on the floor of the lower hull and they can… more
