H-34 USN/USMC Landing Gear (GM)

Published:
Company: Scale Aircraft Conversions

Scale Aircraft Conversions produces metal replacement parts for hundreds of kits in a wide variety of scales. Some of the landing gear sets are generic while others are designed to fit a specific kit. I’ve had some luck with cross-purposing some of the SAC gear, and having a Revell UH-34 in my stash I decided to compare this gear set, engineered for the Gallery kit, with the parts contained in my Revell kit.

The Parts

The SAC product is designed for an H-34, and my Revell kit is a UH-34. Googling images, I came to the conclusion that while there are some differences between the strut braces between the “H” and “UH”, I found enough similarity in appearance to assuage my concerns about significant differences in the appearance of the struts and bracing.

German Wheel Chocks

Published:
Company: Hauler

Hauler produces high quality photo-etched sets for AFVs, airplanes, cars, railway vehicles, resin accessories for dioramas and resin kits (1). Since this is my first association with Hauler-Brengun I think it is appropriate to mention something about the website. The company is located in the Czech Republic and the website is in British English. Other than the occasional misspelled word the website is user friendly, easy to navigate, uncluttered, and well laid out with clear links to the products available, contact info for the company, and a shopping cart for online purchases. I did not use the shopping cart to obtain this review sample. It was provided by Hauler as a courtesy item to the IPMS Reviewer Corps.

Vickers .303 Machine Gun Model 1915

Published:
Company: Hasegawa

The Vickers .303 machine gun is synonymous with Britain and World War I. Used in the air, on the ground, and on the water, the Vickers .303 was capable of a firing rate of about 600 rounds per minute.

This kit produces an excellent representation of this well-known weapon, and considering the ease of construction, Hasegawa deserves a “Well Done”.

The Instruction Sheet

The instruction sheet is actually a broadside, one piece of paper printed front and back. With a combination of phrases or single words coupled with some detailed line drawings, the instructions are very easy to understand. The construction process is not at all complex and presents no problem for the beginner or the more experienced model builder. The paint call-outs involve only two colors, and… more

Apollo 13 Owner’s Workshop Manual

Published:
Book Author(s): David Baker
Company: Quayside Publishing Group

Those of us of a certain age remember April 13, 1970, as a “worst nightmare come to reality” day. On that day the crew of Apollo 13 radioed those famous words, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” The mission ended with the successful and safe return of the astronauts, and gave the world an iconic moment revealing just how dangerous space flight can be.

The author of Apollo 13 Owner’s Workshop Manual is Dr. David Baker, who worked for NASA during the Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle programs. Dr. Baker was part of the team within Houston Mission Control throughout the Apollo 13 mission and, therefore, speaks with a considerable authority. He has written more than 80 books on spaceflight technology, and this is his fourth Haynes manual, following the NASA Mars Rover Manual,… more

875HT Smart Jet Plus Iwata Compressor – Studio Series

Published:
Company: Iwata Medea

There are a number of companies that produce air compressors for the artist and hobbyist, and an even larger number that produce larger and more powerful compressors that can be “regulated down” into the “hobby range”. This review focuses on the Iwata IS 875HT Smart Jet Plus Tubular Compressor.

This Iwata-Medea compressor is a top-of-the-line tool that delivers tremendous quality for the price. A comparison of the characteristics of this compressor and the characteristics of any high-quality compressor will show the reader why this compressor is rated so highly by this reviewer.

Characteristics of a High Quality Compressor

A smooth flow of air is a must. If there is any “sputter” or variation in the flow of air, the end result will be a paint… more

Spitfire, Merlin Variant Walk Around

Published:
Book Author(s): Ron Mackay
Company: Squadron Signal Publications

Squadron Signal Walk Around publications have a long history of high quality and accuracy in detail. This new addition to that line of books is no exception. This particular product focuses on the land-based Spitfires equipped with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, including the Mark I, Vb, and IXc variants. Displayed in extensive detail are the external and internal workings of the aircraft that played a key role in Britain's defense.

This publication is a scale modeler’s delight. Included in the 80 pages within the book are scale drawings, b&w images from WWII, and many color images of museum aircraft. It is the latter than intrigued me as a modeler. As an example, please refer to the image labeled Sample picture 1 and check out the caption. I often articulate the… more

Scale Aircraft Modelling, Vol. 35, Issue 7

Published:
Company: Scale Aircraft Modelling

Each issue of SAM follows a basic design and format. There are usually two Feature Articles, an Aviation in Profile piece, and a series of Compact Build Reviews. In this issue, the first Feature Article is by Marco Preto, who builds and reviews Meng’s Me-410B-2/U4 in 1/48th scale. This article is a must-read for anyone who is going to tackle the Meng kit, a kit that Mr. Preto highly recommends. Along with an outstanding set of images showing Marco’s kit in progress (and completed), he also provides a list of paints and weathering supplies that he used to the outstanding results one sees in the article.

The second Feature Article, on the Supermarine Attacker, was written by Assistant Editor Karl Robinson. Karl’s article highlights the paint selections he made to produce… more

Spitfire Mk. VI

Published:
Company: Hasegawa

The Instruction Sheet

The instruction sheet is typical Hasegawa – that is, the instructions are free of any errors (at least that I noticed), easy to interpret, and with clearly labeled paint call-outs and part call-outs. The thirteen construction steps are on three pages, decal placement and painting guides are on two pages, aircraft history is on a single page, and a parts guide and color call-out list is on a single page.

For the most part, you can jump around on the instructions from step to step. We all do it. Not to worry, but study the assembly process for the prop or you’ll end up having a bit of a mess on your hands. Do not install the blades into the spinner until the spinner has been attached to the spinner shaft. Also, the placement of the six exhaust… more

Scale Aircraft Modelling, Vol. 35, Issue 6

Published:
Company: Scale Aircraft Modelling

The August issue contains two Fature articles that will certainly attract the attention of “Jet” fans. In Feature 1, World Class modeler Yoav Efrati builds and reviews the Kinetic Kfir C2/C7 in 1/48th scale. The images attest to Yoav’s high level of skill as a painter and modeler, but the article itself is a goldmine for some weathering techniques. Yoav used Van Gogh Oils to weather the Kfir, and the effect is stunning.

The article is followed by a two-page spread of color images of the real deal – Kfirs in flight, on the ground, and with the usual detail shots of landing gear, pods, intakes, and some weathering provided by Mother Nature. Topping it off are two pages of profile drawings showing camo patterns, and with the colors involved being identified with FS numbers.
