From its title, this book purports to be about the Royal Navy, but only a minority of the text is devoted to that service. There is no mention of it at all until page 34 (Out of 144 pages total, or roughly almost 25% of the way through the book), where the fate of some submarines sent to the Baltic in 1915 is covered in one paragraph. The Royal Navy then does not re-appear until page 46. While some Royal Navy ships, primarily light cruisers, destroyers, torpedo boats and submarines, were involved in the fighting in this area during the post war period, the part they played was small, usually only involved a few ships and would only merit a footnote in most histories. One interesting aspect is that the HMS Vindictive, a cruiser converted with a “flying off deck” was deployed to the area and some RNAS aircraft, albeit flying from land bases, were used in bombing attacks against ships and shore targets.

Company Background

New Ware is a company in the Czech Republic that is well known to spacecraft modelers. They were new to me. I looked into their website and the text is a mix of English and Czech, and it is noted that Russian, German and Italian are also spoken. They offer kabuki-type masks for many of the popular scales from 1/24 down to the diminutive 1/144, plus eggplanes.

Their on-line catalog is broken down by scale, with a further breakdown for model kit manufacturer. Each mask description for the kit noted with detail the contents such as all clear parts, interior (when offered), other clear parts and wheels.

This volume starts off with six pages of historical text followed by 54 pages of color 3D illustrations. I counted 76 color 3D illustrations along with one table. There are no current nor period photographs.

This is an all-new tooled version of the Hawk and is far superior to the original Airfix version.

This is a kit of the Hawk MIX from Space 1999, this spacecraft appeared in the episode “Wargames”, the kits allows you to build two versions one used in the show and a pre-production version which is the one I opted for.

In the box is:

  • 4 x light grey sprues
  • 1 base mounting wire
  • 1 round dome base
  • 1 decal sheet
  • 1 instruction booklet (Note decal installation instructions are on the box sides)

All the sprues are extremely well molded and great detail; the instruction booklet is easy to follow and well-illustrated. The decal sheet is very large with lots of detail.

Construction

Stage 1, 2 and 3 is the construction of the two side mounted engine pods which had no issues and assembled very well.

This book describes the design, development, and operational history of US-made tanks in British service in World War II. The British were initially reluctant to endorse the American-made tanks as they felt they were inferior to British developed tanks. The British eventually appreciated the simplicity of American designed tanks and modified them to meet British needs. The Lend Lease program allowed Britain to obtain American tanks in adequate numbers to take pressure off of the British manufacturers. By the end of World War II the British tank regiments were equipped with more Sherman tanks than any other type.

The Airfix Stuka is an impressive kit but there is room for improvement. One area that would benefit from aftermarket is the seats. In short, they lack the seatbelts and shoulder harnesses needed to bring this kit out of the ordinary.

Packaged in the typical Eduard resealable packaging with a cardboard stiffener inside is a single pre-painted fret. The cardboard helps prevent bending during storage. The single fret is beautifully represented with ‘shading’ and silver buckles. Since they are thin steel, they are beautifully detailed and bend easily without losing their paint. There are shoulder harnesses for the front seat and lap belts and straps for the other two seats.

The seatbelts are easy enough to add and when seen through the canopy glazing will make a dramatic change to your cockpit. This set is another great example of Eduard’s craft at its finest.

Highly recommended

This is a new version of the King Tiger following up on the release of the Henschel version last year. My first impression was wow what a very well detailed kit. I did review this kit with the addition of the Interior set SPS-062 and Zimmerit Set SPS-060 so the picture will include parts not included in this kit. You can see my reviews of these on this site also. The set is very impressive with the amount of parts and detail included. The parts that would be cast metal on the real tank are well detailed and defined.

The kit contains

This is a Zimmerit Decal set for the Meng Model Sd.Kfz. 182 King Turret (Porsche Turret) kit TS-037.

The set contains one sheet of textured decals and one instruction sheet.

Zimmerit was widely used on the early King Tigers. These decals will make adding the Zimmerit a lot easier.

The decals are printed onto one sheet with the patterns in relief. Individual decals are supplied for all the various areas of front, Sides and rear armor. The turret has the most decals to ensure all the areas are covered properly.

The textured pattern is very nicely raised on the decals and looks very good once applied.

It is highly recommended to primer coat under the contoured areas especially.
