- About the Author
We have all seen snippets of the Ukraine-Russia war on the nightly news almost daily, and have probably checked on stories online. As we all know, these snippets do not tell the real story of the war. Volume 7 of War in Ukraine is a super-detailed chronicle of specific areas of the critical three-month period of the air war immediately after the start of the war (February 20, 2022). This volume follows aircraft, but also missiles and drones in modern warfare. The immense amount of information on this war took the authors almost three years to find, collate, interpret and present.
Only air/missile military operations are recounted, and in chronological order. The authors offer "big picture" estimates of the successes and failures for each side.
The well-reported loss of Russia's Black Sea fleet flagship, the Moskva, is covered in detail rarely seen elsewhere. What was not so well-reported was the Moskva's deadly missile attacks on civilian targets, but detailed in this book.
This book is targeted towards those who want a factual history of the aerial warfare for these three months in 2022, with air and missile attacks being described in detail. Obviously, the air and missile attacks preceded and coincided with the ground actions, which are summarized to give perspective to aerial warfare.
This book is not an easy read - abbreviations are used throughout, and the first-page glossary will be referred to again and again to follow the actions. The intentional attacks on civilians by Russia makes for an unsettling read, especially since the carnage to civilians continues to this day by air and missile attacks. This book meticulously gives the facts, including barbaric acts, that are largely unknown outside of the battleground and nightly news. The rapidity of evolution of air and missile war is stunning and well-explained by the authors.
Recommended for anyone interested in the Ukraine War and with how modern military actions ensue in the missile age.
My thanks to Helion and Casemate Publishers for the opportunity to review the book.
Reviewer Bio
Luke R. Bucci, PhD
Luke built all kinds of models starting in the early '60s, but school, wife Naniece, and work (PhD Clinical Nutritionist) caused the usual absence from building. Picked up modeling to decompress from grad school, joined IPMSUSA in 1994 and focused on solely 1/700 warships (waterline!) and still do. I like to upgrade and kitbash the old kits and semi-accurize them, and even scratchbuild a few. Joined the Reviewer Corps to expand my horizon, especially the books nobody wants to review - have learned a lot that way. Shout out to Salt Lake and Reno IPMSUSA clubs - they're both fine, fun groups and better modelers than I, which is another way to learn. Other hobbies are: yes, dear; playing electric bass and playing with the canine kids.
