Polish Wings 15-Supermarine Spitfire IX 1944-1946
This volume continues the story of Supermarine Spitfire MK IXs used by Polish pilots in Britain during the years 1944-1946, both in Polish and RAF squadrons and auxiliary units. Information on aircraft and crew losses and officially credited victories is included.
There are over 200 photographs (about half of which have not been published before) and about 30 color profiles (plus top and bottom views for two representative aircraft). In several instances, full color renderings are included alongside period images of the aircraft. Very nice touch.
Wojtek Matusiak, the author who lives in Warsaw, Poland, is a well-known Polish aviation history author. He is a specialist on the Spitfire and has published both in English and Polish.
From a modeler’s perspective, I found the aircraft and equipment details contained within the pictures very useful and informative. The images are not only quite clear, each contains a wealth of detail for those willing to look for it. The author often makes a point of noting specific details in many of the images. Often those points would be lost on the casual observer. Looking closely, one will see the various chipping effects caused by use and maintenance, battle damage, weathering, lubricant leaks, exhaust staining, stenciling, miscellaneous fuel tank and weapons arrangements. Several views show personal markings on the aircraft.
In addition, the many images of Spitfires on the ground include the aircrew and ground crew posing near the aircraft. The uniforms, the service equipment, various auxiliary fuel tanks, bombs and, yes, the hair styles are revealed. Talk about inspiration for the diorama builder.
From a modeler’s perspective, this publication has an absolute wealth of details that will prove to be inspirational and valuable.
I wish to thank Mushroom Model Publications and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review this book. I enjoyed reading the informative text and viewing the many images, and will find this as a valuable reference in the future. Highly recommended for the modeler and historian.
