This is a good book if you want to understand the Israel-Palestine conflict. Author Bill Norton does an incredible job of stripping away the hyperbole and myths surrounding the current events of this conflict. I thought I knew more than the average person about modern Israel history: this book has changed my thinking. This book will challenge a lot of conventional thinking, and you will quickly realize that there is no one good side, the situation is murky, muddy, and messy. Both sides have valid points and excess abuses.

The title alone is worth picking up the book and is even more impressive when it is laid out that Israel is in a conflict on seven fronts over a two (and now three) year span. The seven fronts include:

• Gaza Strip – Established on 7 October 2023 when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack resulting in heavy casualties, widespread destruction and worldwide shock
• Lebanon – Hezbollah engaged Israel with thousands of rockets and drone attacks, escalating tensions in the north and prompting a third war in Lebanon
• Syria – Israel targeting Iranian elements and other militant groups to prevent Iranian encroachment and solidifying of power
• Iran – Israeli attacks including drone and missile strikes on nuclear infrastructure, air defenses and targeting key figures
• Iraq – Israel targeting Iranian-backed militias that targeted Israel
• Yemen – Long distance Israeli attacks Iranian-backed Houthi rebels
• West Bank – Escalating violence between Palestinian militants and encroaching Israeli settlers

The first paragraph of the Preface excellently sets the stage and tone of the book,

The 7 October 2023 attack on Israel by terrorists from the Gaza Strip was the worst such event in Israel’s complex history. It marked the beginning of the longest war in the state’s existence with the highest casualties and infrastructure damage, and another tough period for the Palestinians under Israeli occupation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was employed in strikes across the Middle East to an extent never before witnessed. The political climate became more polarized and the future more obscure. It continued a century-old conflict for which many across the world would have strong opinions. The book focuses on the military aspects of this war and its place in the wider Arab-Israeli conflict that has been in play since 1947. However, geopolitical underpinnings are examined to appreciate motives and consequences. It is limited to the span of a single Helion @War volume and draws largely upon international news reporting as the events unfolded.

The author’s next paragraphs outline his methodology of balancing reports, avoiding perspectives, targeted propaganda and disinformation. He finishes up the paragraph with “That I will still offend is understood, but it is not intentional.” He even provides his personal email address for readers who want to comment or offer additional research. As someone who has spent years of his professional life in combat in the Middle East, I applaud his decision to take on a difficult, confusing, and misunderstood conflict with as unbiased an approach as possible to try to make sense of, or at least an accounting of, what has transpired. He made a good effort, and I found myself frustrated, confused, and very contemplative about these past few crucial years.

Even without the absolutely necessary complexity of the Seven Fronts War, which is now in its third year (the Addendum is of 11 March 2026, and a lot more has happened that affects most of the world), modelers of IDF subjects, American aircraft and Iranian weapon systems will be greatly rewarded. The vast majority of photographs are in high-definition color, starting with historical black-and-white photographs in the beginning.

The Seven Front War is being fought with conventional weapons and the latest technology available. Drone warfare on both sides, hypersonic missiles, cyberwarfare, and information operations are all being honed, while missile defense systems are trying to stop drone and missile (including ballistic missiles) attacks on critical infrastructure. Among the items of interest for modelers in the profile section are:

The photographs and profiles are well worth the price of the book, particularly for modelers who want to build a model, vignette or diorama of the Seven Fronts War. The camouflage is varied, and artwork is crisp to recreate a particular vehicle or aircraft.

This book is not easy to read, and that is a good thing, as normalizing the level and complexity of this type of warfare should not be easy to digest. After reading this book, my thoughts have changed, and as I look back on my notes and bookmarks, it is still hard to know how I feel about the current situation. Perhaps that is the mark of a great book is that it challenges conventional thinking, and perhaps that itself will bring change. That two world leaders are more alike in so many ways than is comfortable, and both appear to be more involved for personal reasons, than national interests, is scary. Carl von Clausewitz’s 1832 treatise Vom Kriege (On War), “War is merely the continuation of policy by other means”. It appears all sides have forgotten that the steps leading up to war can be an off-ramp.

This book is highly recommended.
