New editor Gary Hatcher takes over the reins of Scale Aircraft Modeling and make some changes immediately in the format of the magazine. One thing you'll notice right away is the change to much more history interspersed with the modeling. Another interesting note is that many of the articles no longer have white backgrounds going to grey or blue gray in several articles. This is a first issue with these changes. The old structure and build types are gone and this concentrates more on feature articles.

For this issue, the first feature article by Tony O'Toole is refurbishment of a converted Airfix Stirling C.Mk.V. The article takes you through stripping the paint off, updating the engines with resin ones. He finishes it off with a nice paint scheme and subtle weathering.

The next article is by Francis Chapman and builds Aeroclubs 1/48 Tiger Moth in unusual marking from New Zealand's ZK-AIA. The moth scheme is quite eye catching and he also goes into getting the biplanes wings aligned properly and his rigging.

The Aircraft in Profile article by Richard Mason highlights the deHavilland Hornet, the later versions. The color profiles are superb. there is a variety of colors. Along with this are 1/72 3 view drawings along with photos of the real thing. This is followed by a look at Trumpeters new kit buy Richard Bolingbroke. He goes in depth pointing out many errors in the kit while getting an excellent looking results.

Part 2 of the UN Observation Post build by Derek Griffiths focuses of the AAC Sioux /Bell 47 and shows all the upgrades he put into it. I love the look of the sheepskin seats! The additional wire detailing also makes the build stand out.

The remainder of the article are not specific builds but combination of kit reviews, history or a combination of both:

• A review of the Bf110's by Neil Robinson goes through the variety of kits available, their pluses and minuses and the way they can fit into a build of Erprobunsgruppe 210
• Andy Scott gives us a summary of the F-86 focusing on the D, L and K versions and reviewing the kits available for those builds.
• Kirk Paloulain reviews the F-4E AUP Hellenic version of the Phantom covering the history and upgrades to the real planes.
• The article by Paul Lucas details the Boulton Paul Defiant in its day fighter role along with great shots of the actual planes along with two pages of profiles.
• Tim Skeet authors and article on what all of us have, a stash of kits and focuses on a kit everyone who loves aviation should build, the deHavilland DH 103.

In addition, there are numerous notes, new kit announcements and other modeling related items. There is great detail on Airfix's announcement of their 1/24th scale Typhoon. As always, SAM is highly recommended for its content and excellent reference information.
