The June issue features a build of the classic F4U-4 Corsair by HobbyBoss. This six-page article by Brian Wakeman will serve as an excellent reference for anyone wishing to build the F4U-4 early version. Brian’s article details the process he used to build the kit and then to weather the model. The end result is stunning. Brian includes a list of the supplies he used to achieve the spectacular results seen in the images.

Brian’s article is immediately followed by a companion article by James Ashton. James uses the companion kit to HB’s #80386 Corsair, by using HB’s #80387 F4U-4 late. This article also provides a rich and detailed storyline of the build process. James weathered with acrylic over lacquer, separated by a coat of AKI fluid. The end result is a truly spectacular weathered effect. The article, similar to Brian’s, includes a list of materials used and is augmented by images that are rich in detail and superb in quality.

In keeping with the F4U-4 theme, both articles are preceded by the standard SAM Aviation in Profile article. This article features multiple pages of full-color profile illustrations of Corsairs from WW II up to domestic use (in the USA) in 1956. Three pages of full-color detail photographs provide detail shots of the undercarriage, exhaust piping, folding wing mechanisms, and tail wheel/tail hook areas.

As is the case in each issue of SAM, there are a number of Compact Build Reviews.

  • Karl Robinson reviews the Airfix 1/72nd P-51D and his review includes a description of using the Alclad system to achieve a fantastic paint job.
  • Jeremias Luchina reviews the Aconcagua Models Embraer 312 Tucano. This is a resin kit, and Jeremias reminds us to wear a respirator when working with resin. That’s sound advice.
  • Massimo Santarossa reviews the ATL.98 Carvair kit in 1/144th by Roden.
  • Nigel Poole reviews the Zvezda 1/72nd Mil-24A Hind.
  • Mike Williams reviews the Academy 1/48th F-4B Phantom II. The Article Contents List contains a typo. This kit is 1/48th scale, not the 1/72nd scale shown in the List. No worries though. Mike does a terrific job and concludes that this kit is “simply phabulous.”

SAM is highly recommended for its content, which features high quality builds, and also for its articles, which include some excellent reference information. In fact, this issue will be as much of a workbench tool as a hobby knife or an airbrush due to the excellent how-to info contained in each article. Slip it into a plastic baggie and leave it on the workbench throughout your project…don’t want to risk getting paint and glue on the pages!

Thanks to Scale Aircraft Modelling for the opportunity to review the June issue and IPMS/USA for the review space.
