Scale Aircraft Modelling, Vol. 36, Issue 7
Each issue of Scale Aircraft Modeling has been a basic design and format but they changed it up with the last issue. In this issue, there are five feature articles, an Aviation in Profile piece, and five Compact Build Reviews.
The Feature articles for this issue start with Jay Laverty's build review of the Trumpeter 1/48 Westland Whirlwind Mk I. The kit is built and shows no issues. The majority of the article concentrates on the superb weathering done to replicate V HE which showed a lot of chipping. Mr. Laverty also corrects the markings, adds Barracuda cast wheels and uses ComArt's excellent weathering set. The result is spectacular!
Next up is Mr. Laverty's build of Planet models 1/48 Westland Welkin. This is a good size all resin kit and it is finished superbly in a Medium Sea Grey scheme. There are also some excellent tips in working with resin kits.
Next up, Yves van Den Brouck builds Tarangus 1/48 Saab A 32A Lansen, the first injection molded kit of this subject. He also adds Maestro Models Lansen interior to dress up the build. The end product looks superb with its natural metal underside.
Marco Preto builds Hasegawa's 1/72 Nakajima B5N2 Kate in a very weathered scheme replicating A1-301, one of the planes that took part in the Pearl harbor attach but this time, later in its career in the Indian Ocean with bombs attached. Mr. Preto duplicates this showing how to work with the photoetch fin flaps and lots of chipping.
Lastly for features, Dai Williams dives into Wingnut Wings 1/32 Roland C.II and also uses Bob's Buckles and Rosten rigging thread. There is an excellent representation showing how to replicate the laminated propellers. The kit is finished in light blue grey and it is very nice.
The Aviation in Profile article covers both of the Westland planes, the Whirlwind and the Welkin. There is also several pages of photo details that are excellent also.
As is the case in each issue of SAM, there are a number of Compact Build Reviews.
- Jay Laverty continuing build of the 1/12 scale Spitfire. Still a ways to go but coming along nicely.
- Seb Videc builds the 1/72 Tarangus Saab J 29 Tunnan
- Nino Gakovic builds RS Models 1/72 He 280
- Angel Exposito Gonzales builds MPM Models 1/72 Douglas D8-8A-3N and it is superb!
- Yoav Efrati builds and retails Kinetic's 1/48 F-21/C1 Kfir. This is probably my favorite build. It is truly fantastic.
In addition, there are numerous notes, new kit announcements and other modeling related items. As always, SAM is highly recommended for its content and excellent reference information.
Thanks to Scale Aircraft Modelling and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review this issue.
