Book Cover

This tome is the second in this new series, Single. This series format consists of a 4-view colour profile, scale plans, and photo details of a single variant; in this case the PZL P.11c. MMPBooks are distributed in North America by Casemate Publications. You won’t find an introduction or background summary, as this series dives straight into the drawings, illustrations, and photographs.

Artur Juszczak has illustrated over forty books for MMP. Some of these titles include the following: Boulton Paul Defiant (MMP Yellow 6117); Hurricane Ace Josef František: The True Story (MMP Blue 9); Henschel Hs 123 (MMP Orange 8114); and Fighters over France and Low Countries (MMP Red 4).

Dariusz Karnas is a skilled modeler and aviation historian. He lives in Przemysl, Poland. He has authored or contributed colour plates and/or scale drawings for over one hundred publications. These include MMP's Polish Wings, Scale Plans, and Inside series as well as books in the MMP Yellow series: Fieseler 156 Storch 1938-1945 (2012) and Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-15 (2004). You can find Dariusz Karnas on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/people/Dariusz-Karnas/100008987326348 . He lives in Przemyśl, Poland.

The front and back covers by Artur Juszczak features Hieronim Dudwat’s PZL P.11c of 113 EM circa September 1939 top view. Dariusz Karnas supplied eight 1/72 line drawings, four 1/48 line drawings (including 10 cross-sections for both scales), and one 1/24 scale drawing of the Bristol Mercury VS2 engine. One small inset featured the Wibault system of corrugated skin. I counted 36 black and white photos and five color photographs of the cockpit. These photographs include a mix of period pics, PZL P.11c manual pages, along with detailed photographs of the Polish Aviation Museum’s PZL P.11c. Dariusz Karnas provided the page width-sized color instrument panel (with instrument description legend – see attached Page 21). Artur Juszczak finished the book with the full-page width color profiles of Hieronim Dudwat’s PZL P.11c, complete with underwing colors and the squadron emblem in detail. The Table of Contents focuses on the following sections:

  • 1/72 Drawings
  • 1/48 Drawings [Page 13]
  • Captioned Photographs [Page 15]
  • Color Instrument Panel Illustration [Page 21]
  • Color 4-View Illustration

MMPBooks’ PZL P.11c provides a quick reference for modelers. The drawings in 1/72 and 1/48 support the wide range of existing 1/72 and 1/48 model kits available and the captioned detailed photos provide a detailed reference. The color illustration of the instrument panel with its legend is noteworthy for those looking for that extra detail. (Editors Note: Arma Hobby makes a dandy little 1/72 PZL P.11c kit. :) )

This tome is essential if you're considering building the Mirage Hobby 1/48 kit (especially if you are still hanging on to the older (Squadron) LTD and Warrior kits). If you have any interest in Polish aircraft, this is a must-have book.

My thanks to Casemate Publications, Mushroom Model Publications and IPMS/USA for the chance to review this great book.

Highly recommended!
