Phoenix Scale Publications came to be at Scale Model World in 2021and was formed by a veteran group of aviation and scale modeling talents. They have come out with a series of books on specific planes and also what is being reviewed here, a wonderful monthly magazine, Phoenix Aviation Modelling, which is available as individual choices from their web site, or even better a subscription. The magazines are also currently available at 250 Barnes & Noble stores for $12.99.

Inside the magazine are 10 feature articles with specific builds, coverage of newsstand (publications), Czech News (covering new releases from the Czech Republic), new kit releases, along with coverage of new aftermarket and decals. There is also a nice comment from IPMS/UK.

The builds in the July 2022 issue include:

  • Airfix 1/72nd D.H. Mosquito B.XVI
  • Tamiya 1/48th A-1H Skyraider
  • Trumpeter 1/32nd F-14D Tomcat
  • Tamiya 1/32nd F-16CJ
  • Airfix 1/72nd A-4B/Q Skyhawk
  • Cyber-Hobby 1/72nd Sea King HC.4
  • Eduard 1/48th Bf-109C2 Tropical
  • Italeri 1/72nd Jaguar GR.1
  • Tamiya 1/48th Me-262-1a
  • Eduard 1/48th Tornado GR.1 with JP-233

Let’s take a look at an article to show the detail. The Trumpeter 1/32nd F-14D has been around for a while and Rene van der Hart gives it the royal treatment by adding Aires cockpit and exhaust, Reskit LGB, Wolfpack Pylons and ALQ pod, Master Models Pitot tube, Quickboost steps, Wheeliant wheels, and Eduard photoetch undercarriage set to enhance and upgrade the kit.

The build starts with the cockpit and works all the way step by step through the entire build showing detail shots and with great commentary on paint and weathering. There is a great detail on painting the no-skids walkways on the wings and weathering, which is so prominent on the Tomcat,

The build is finished with great detail shots of the front gear, boarding ladder and great pictures of the finished model. This level of superb photos and great text is for every article. Some are out of the box and some detailed builds. Add to this the great coverage of news and decal/aftermarket releases and this is the premiere aircraft modeling magazine. Definitely recommended.

Thanks to Phoenix Publications for the opportunity to review this great magazine!
