Model Art - Air Model Special No. 07: IJA Type 3 Ki-61 Hien
Model Art has published No.7 in the series labeled, “Air Model Special” and this issue focuses on the Ki-61 Hien.
Some 60 pages in this issue are dedicated to coverage a number of different kits of the Ki-61, by a variety of different kit manufacturers, and in multiple scales. The photography is stunning, but then that has long been a feature of Model Art publications. The workmanship displayed in the models is world class and the images provide an excellent resource for detailing, painting, and markings.
This issue, were it to offer nothing more than the excellent article on the Ki-61, would be worth the cost, but it also includes short articles on a number of other subjects.
Featured is an article entitled, “V/STOL, Part 1, First Flight 50th Anniversary Part 1: First Generation Harriers. Some excellent images of Harriers “in the field” are accompanied by several pages of profile drawings. Some are in black and while, while most are in full color showing stencils and national markings, camo schemes and Squadron markings.
The Trumpeter 1/48th scale A-37 Dragonfly is reviewed. Several pages have full-color images of the model in progress, serving as an excellent resource for modelers who are working on this Trumpeter kit.
Following the article on the Dragonfly are similar articles on the Kitty Hawk TF-9J, and an expanded article on the Hasegawa T-4 Blue Impulse kit.
This issue of Model Art is a treat for the eye, and excellent resource for historical information, and a gold mine of information on color schemes.
Thanks to Model Art for supplying this publication for review by IPMS/USA. This publication is highly recommended for the quality of the photographs and the high level of modeling skill exhibited in those images.
