When I saw this kit on the review list, I decided to build it as a preview of the “Dual Combo” of single seat MiGs by Eduard I have in my stash. All I can say is I can’t wait to start them now! This issue from Platz provides parts for one two-seat MiG 15 UTI version of this famous little fighter. Included are markings for the Finnish AF as advertised on the box but also two Polish AF examples. The parts are typical Eduard with excellent surface detail perfectly delicate for this scale. Colors are given for Mr. Color, Aqueous and Tamiya paint lines. A masking set is also included for canopies, back seat blast shield and windows under the fuselage. The decals are printed by Rocketeer Decal and are up to the standard of the rest of the kit.

Assembly is simple and quick. The cockpit is the only place where I have deducted some points. No seat belts or instrument panel details are provided in the kit. I pulled some from the spares box and moved on. I had a little difficulty closing the fuselage halves, but I suspect that the ballast I used interfered with the fit, so I won’t hold that against Platz. The rest of the assemblies fell into place. Paint-wise, I relied on my standard Mr. Color #8 Silver and Tamiya LP-38 Flat Aluminum for the airframe and drop tanks respectively. Masking was easy using the set provided. They are very thin and conform well with just the right amount of grip. The decals performed exactly as good decals should, using only Micro Set. I was particularly impressed by the main landing gear assemblies. The MIG 15 has a complex arrangement of the doors and bracing. Eduard has captured it perfectly and even molds the wheel hubs as separate parts to aid in the painting.

I can highly recommend this kit for its excellent engineering that makes building it a breeze. The only way Platz could have done better is the inclusion of some seat harnesses and instruments for the panels. A thoroughly enjoyable build for anyone interested in this subject. Thank you to Platz/Eduard for the sample and to IPMS for allowing me a preview of this excellent package.
