F-86F-40 Sabre, Part 1: Box Contents
Academy/MRC has released a new North American F-86F-40 Sabre in 1/48th scale with leading edge slatted wings. There are two new sprue-runners (H & I) with upgraded wings, slats, 200 gallon drop tanks, and main landing gear wheels.
From Scalemates.com, the original molding by Academy (in 1998) has the unslatted “6-3” wings. 7 of the 9 sprue-runners are from the original molding which includes two pilots (one seated and one standing), ordnance (bombs, missiles, & fuel tanks), and the option to modify the fuselage and show off the engine. A transport dolly to support the separated aft fuselage is included - NICE!
In The Box
The kit is enclosed in a top open box and comes with eight gray sprues, one clear, decal sheet, and a masking set. Instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow and contain 17 steps for assembly.
Decals are printed in South Korea and designed by Crossdelta. There are two general marking options for this kit over several airframes:
- F-86F-25 with F-40 “Extended Wing” retrofitted, 3525/4530ths Combat Crew Training Wing, USAF. Williams AFB, AZ, 1958/1959.
- Airframe: 52-5374
- Airframe: 52-4608
- Airframe: 52-5346
- Target Drones (including Mitsubishi built) F-86F-40s, NAS Point Mugu, 1991.
- Airframe: 55-3838
- Airframe: 56-2834
The surface detail for 1/48th scale is recessed and scale appropriate.
For the clear parts, there is a center mold line down the canopy exterior. This will need to removed and buffed out prior to installation.
The molded engine detail looks impressive. However, it will require extra effort and some modeling skills to separate the fuselage to show off the engine. But the payoff may be worth it for an F-86 Sabre fan. Please note, because of this added engine more nose weight will be needed to not make this a tail sitter.
Another nice feature are covers for the engine intake and exhaust. This is for those who do not want to deal with intake/exhaust internal seams you have the option to close those openings.
Conclusion
First impression of this kit looks great and with the new addition of the slatted wings will make this Sabre stand out at a contest table or in your display cabinet. I look forward to building this kit and posting the completed build in a future review.
I want to thank Academy/MRC for providing the F-86F Sabre kit and IPMS/USA for allowing me the opportunity to review.
Highly Recommended!
