Front cover

AOA Decals specializes in Navy and Marine Corps subjects from the Vietnam era. This particular sheet focuses on Trumpeters very nice 1/32nd scale A-4 kit and is Part 4 of the Scooter decals. This set is similar to the first three parts with coverage of USN/USMC A-4’s with three choices of colorful squadrons and also a choice of aircraft with and without the later avionics hump. There are also different time periods represented for each of the squadrons so there are a total of six options. The options are:

  • VMA-211 Wake Island Avengers - 2 A-4E options from Chu Lai, South Vietnam between 1968-69
  • VA-22 Fighting Redcocks - 2 A-4F options from USS Bon Homme Richard 1970 (one CAG, one-line scheme)
  • VA-55 Warhorses - 2 options, one A-4E from USS Ranger 1965-66 and one A-4F from USS Hancock 1972

Inside the package, you’ll find AOA’s wonderful instructions and three decal sheets. The decal sheets are printed by Cartograf and have superb color and alignment. Two of the sheets cover the markings while a third sheet is a full set of stencils for one aircraft. AOA also offers the stencil sheet separately so there is no need to purchase the entire sheet again if you want to do a second scheme from this sheet. Lastly, there is a correction decal for the Wake Island plane correcting the orientation of the decal. Also in the package, there are two sheets of full color profiles covering all six aircraft. Each profile includes notes on that specific aircraft with details concerning the aircraft and application of the decals. There is a single sheet two-sided covering the color schemes and the application of the stencils. AND, there is a section on correcting some of the little issues with the Trumpeter kit. In total, there are eleven separate suggestions. Some are specific to these aircraft such as filling the RATO holes (which none of these aircraft were equipped with at these times); some are for all aircraft such as removing the right side nose air vent which was only a left side thing. These are for the modeler to choose.

So, you get Cartograf decals for six colorful schemes with excellent instructions and full stenciling along with eleven recommendations on how to fix the details of your kit. This is a complete package and a welcome addition to upgrading the Trumpeter kit.

Most recommended. My thanks to AOA Decals and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review these items.
