Hobby Boss released a 1/48 scale kit of the Blohm & Voss Bv 141 reconnaissance plane last year. Eduard has released this detail set for the kit.

The detail set comprises of 2 frets of metal parts, one with pre-painted instrument panels, consoles and seat belts, the other fret is unpainted brass. The unpainted sheet contains main landing gear doors, ammo racks, walkway area for the wing and other small details.

The interior details replace some of the molded detail and add other missing details that Hobby Boss left out. The control/instrument panels are all self-adhesive, although I ended up using either CA or Gator Grip Glue, depending on the part, because the adhesive seemed to be lacking and didn’t want to stick very well. I don’t know if it was because of the way I handled them or if it is the adhesive Eduard uses that they weren’t very sticky. The control and instrument panels all fit perfectly on the intended areas after shaving and sanding off the molded detail. There are also rudder pedals included which add a lot of detail to the very visible cockpit.

One issue with the pre-painted parts is that Eduard used RLM 66 for the color of them, which would be correct for most German aircraft, but the interior of the Bv 141 should be RLM 02. Even Hobby Boss calls out the wrong color, so I can’t blame Eduard. I just left the RLM 66 on the Eduard parts and didn’t worry about the color differences.

The pre-painted seat belts went together easily and really dress up the seats. The instructions do not indicate it, but there is a third set of belts supplied for the bomber/radio operator/cameraman/gunners sliding seat in the front of the crew compartment. They build up the same as the other 2 sets and just attach to the side of the seat.

The ammo racks build up easily. I rolled the edges around an appropriately sized drill bit and folded up the bottom. The detail on them is very nice and they make great scale replacements for the plastic parts. The only issue I have with them is that they are empty, there are no ammo drums to put in them. If you have extra ammo drums in your stash you can fill up the holders.

For parts 59 and 60, the external covers for the machine guns on the front, I found that they fit the openings better if I switched them around.

All in all, I would say that this detail set if very worthwhile and adds some missing details to the kit. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is building the Hobby Boss Bv 141. I would like to thank Eduard and IPMS for giving me the opportunity to build and review this photo etch set.
