This is the third set of 1/72 decals from AOA Decals. The decals are printed by Cartigraf of Italy, look very nice, are clear, in register, and work very well. These decals are spaced very close together so use a really good pair of decal scissors so you don’t accidentally cut the one next to it.

The first test for decals, that I use, is to apply the walkway markings because they are long and straight. If they are really long you can cut them apart and mate them up again but that wasn’t needed here. These went on properly with no problem at all. I was very impressed with the ease and smoothness with which they could be applied. They came off the sheet well and I was able to move them into place once I got them on.

There also needs to be a special note about their instruction sheets. There were eight 8-1/2 x 11 sheets detailing everything you would want to know to build one of these options. The profiles were in color and easy to understand. They even go farther by giving you the weapons load out for VAL-4. You can tell that a lot of work and research went into this. It’s really nice to see a company put this much care into a product.

The options included in this set are:

  • (2 aircraft) for VMO-6 “Cherry Six”/ Klondikers, at Quang Tri, South Vietnam,1969, and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Futenma, Japan,1971
  • (2 options for 1 aircraft) for VS-41 Shamrocks at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, California USA, 1969/1971
  • (16 options for 10 aircraft) for VAL-4 Black Ponies at Vung Tau Binh and Bin Thuy, South Vietnam, from 1969-72

The hardest part was to decide which Bronco I wanted to do. They really give you a lot of options. They also provide two full sets of stencils for two aircraft, as well as markings for seats and pilot helmets, which is unheard of in 1/72 scale. The decals aren’t too thick and worked well with Micro Set and Micro Sol.

I highly recommend these decals. They look great and are made well so they don’t rip while placing them. I can’t wait to see what other decal sets they come out with next.

I would like to thank AOA decals and IPMS USA for the chance to review this item. I really enjoyed using them and can’t wait to use more.
