This is the latest Eduard Spitfire release and is the Mk.XVI Bubbletop version. This series is great and I have three of the other version in my stash. As this is the ProfiPack version it comes with the additional the Eduard accessories to add the extra details.

In the box is:

  • 5 x light grey sprues
  • 1 clear sprue
  • 1 photoetched details parts
  • 1 mask set
  • 1 decal sheet
  • 1 instruction booklet

All the sprues are extremely well molded and super fine details we have come to expect from Eduard’s kits.

The kit can be built as any of five versions; you need to decide before commencing the built which you are going to do. I originally was going to do version B but as explained later I ended up finishing it as Version E the personal aircraft of the Air Officer Commanding no 21 Group RAF.

Want an easy upgrade the new tool Airfix kits of the Gloster Gladiator? Step right up to the new Quickboost Gloster Gladiator air intakes that provide a beautiful replacement to the kit parts. The supplied instructions identify which Airfix kit provided plastic parts with the new Quickboost replacements.

Quickboost has molded the air intakes perfectly in light tan resin with no apparent bubbles. The Quickboost air intakes are supplied on a single resin sprue with thin resin attachments to the parts that should minimize any cleanup.

Although most paints will adhere to resin alone, I would recommend that you wash the parts to remove any remaining mold release and prime them first. They will need to be installed with your favorite CA (super glue) or epoxy, as the normal plastic glues or solvents will not react with the resin.

The Vought F4U-5N Corsairs were delivered from the factory with four 20mm cannons with installed flash suppressors. Quickboost provides you with a set of Vought F4U-5N 20mm cannon fairings with flash suppressors. Of note is the re-sealable packaging that Quickboost uses that makes the parts easy to review and then stuff back into the package securely. There are no supplied instructions; you simply swap out the Hobby Boss provided plastic parts with the new Quickboost replacements. Although these cannon fairings with flash suppressors could be used on other F4U-5N kits with modification, Quickboost already has a set out for the Hasegawa F4U-5N kit (QB 48 680).

Quickboost has molded the cannon fairings with flash suppressors perfectly in light grey resin with no apparent bubbles. The Quickboost exhausts have no mold seams to sand off along with a hollowed out barrel flash suppressors.

Revell has re-released their vintage WWII Gato Class Submarine in enormous 1/72 scale – topping off at just over 52 inches in length! Surface detail of the deck and fittings is excellent, as well as their renderings of the 20mm, 40mm, and 4inch deck armament. Also included are three sets of pre-bent, steel wire steps as well as a variety of pre-drilled stanchions for stringing safety cabling.

Overshadowing everything, however, is simply the sheer size of the hull – an ambitious project for any modeler.

Aerobonus has provided another addition to the great Diorama releases with this US WWII load cart. These were used to manually transport single bombs to the aircraft on Aircraft Carriers and also airfields.

The detail quality is great, there minimal flash or other imperfections. The parts once removed from the mold base are ready to assembly. The small parts are very delicate and you must take extreme care when removing from the mold base. I had a big problem with the four small grab handles which all broke and I had to replace them with wire ones I made.

The Assembly is quick and easy. The final part is painted yellow and looks great as an addition to any diorama.

Thanks go to Aires for providing this kit to review and IPMS USA for allowing me to review it for them.

This kit is the 2nd release of a 24th scale Mosquito by Airfix, the first being the Mosquito kit, A25001 released toward the end of 2009. Note that the box art for the two releases is not the same and the item numbers are slightly different. The original release is “25001” and this new release is “25001a”.

Opening the box, one will find 14 plastic bags containing 18 sprues loaded with 617 parts. Having some experience with the original release, a very cursory inspection leads me to conclude that the new release is the same, or very similar to the original release. I noticed the same pattern of ejector pin marks that appeared on the original release, and that is a bit of a disappointment. Many will not be visible when the model is complete, but those that are visible can prove to be time-consuming to eliminate.

Scale Aircraft Conversions celebrated their Silver Anniversary last year, and now have over twenty-five years of supplying resin and white metal parts to model builders. This is the sixth landing gear set from SAC that I have reviewed, and once again, they have provided an excellent metal option for kit-supplied landing gear. This set is intended for the 1/72 scale F4D-1 Douglas Skyray that was released by Tamiya in 1998 (kit 41 of the 1/72 scale War Bird Collection). The purpose of this replacement set is to provide stronger landing gear that is adjustable if necessary to obtain proper angles. Even with no previous experience in using white metal parts, this set will provide an upgrade that most modelers will have no issue installing.

As Wikipedia puts it: The Airspeed AS.51 Horsa was a British World War II troop-carrying glider, built by Airspeed Limited and subcontractors, used for air assault by British and Allied armed forces. It was named after Horsa, the legendary 5th-century conqueror of southern Britain. It had an aircrew of two and normally carried 20 – 25 paratroopers. Originally, it was intended to carry bombs and was designed so that paratroopers could leave the plane while in flight using parachutes. Both of these ideas were eventually dropped and paratroopers were expected to ride the glider all the way to the ground.

Quickboost is a company that specializes in drop-in resin replacement parts to enhance the appearance of your models. Being “drop-in” replacements, it is very rare you need you modify the original parts, hence the “quick” name.

In this case I am reviewing the Gun Barrels for the well-known A-36 Apache in 1/48 scale from Accurate Miniatures, this kit is also available reboxed by Italeri.

As you can see from the pictures the resin parts have hollow ends and deeper holes in the cooling jacket, which would take a wash much easier and would look much better than the plastic parts.

Highly recommened.

I would like to thank Aires/Quickboost and IPMS/USA for the review sample.

Also you might notice the overall size of the pylon is a bit shorter in the resin part than in the plastic part. I do not know which one (plastic or resin) is closer to the real size –in scale-. Check your own references and make your decision as to which one to use.

Recommended.

Eduard continues to release great photoetch sets and this is no exception. This set is for the Kinetic Mirage IIIE, and adds a lot of missing detail to the cockpit that really adds to the kit.

The photoetch parts are for the:

  • Seat
  • Instrument panel
  • Canopy details

In the packet is:

  • 1 photoetch sheet
  • 1 instruction sheet

Summary

This set uses a PE sheet from the other Eduard set, no. 49742, so you would not need to purchase both of these sets, but select which one is best for your build.

This is a must-have set for the Kinetic kit that makes it into a great model with all you need to add more detail to the aircraft cockpit. The instruments are great, and make the cockpit very impressive.

Thanks go to Eduard for providing this set to review and IPMS USA for allowing me to review it.

The M4 series of tanks, popularly known as the Sherman tank, was the most important U.S. medium tank of the Second World War. It fought on every front, from the steamy jungles of the Pacific campaigns, to the dusty baking hot desert environs of North Africa, to the freezing snowy conditions of the Russian front winters. The culmination of the design, at least during WW2, was the M4A3E8 variant, known by the troops as the “Easy 8”. This variant first saw combat in Western Europe in December 1944.

Academy continues its tradition of rendering armored fighting vehicles of the Israeli Defense Force. They have kitted several variants of the Merkava and are now doing a second variant of the Magach series (The first being Magach 6B Gal Batash, kit #13281). The Israelis are well known for renovating and modernizing older vehicles, the Magach being a prime example of this tradition. Using older M-60 Patton hulls and turrets, the Israelis upgraded the engine, armor system, and fire control system, the vehicles remained competitive into the 1990s, but have gradually been withdrawn from active service. Some quick research on the web seems to indicate that they have been withdrawn from service, but I am uncertain if they are used by reserve formations or Israeli para-military units.

As you can see from the pictures the resin parts have better surface detail plus removal points from the pouring stub are easier to hide than in their plastic counterparts. Also the flash hiders are very delicate, so exercise care when handling. At the same time they will look terrific in a finished model!

When they revamped Battlestar Galactica in 2003 they revamped many of the ships including the Viper fighters. They were retiring the Mk II as the new Mk VII was in service. Unfortunately, the Cylons had a way to disrupt the newer fighters rendering them powerless so the Mk II fighters had to be brought back into service to carry the fight. Later in the series the Mk VIIs were able to rejoin their earlier cousins and combat the Cylon tyranny.

Moebius brought out very nicely detailed 1/32nd scale kits of both Viper versions as well as the new Cylon Raider but these kits didn’t really fit in with my collection of 72nd scale fighters so I was very excited to see them release new kits of all 3 of these fighters in my scale and to make things better, you get 2 kits in each box. This review focus’ on the newest kit, the Viper Mark VIIs.

The Moebius '54 Hudson is a welcome re-tool after the fine '53 Hudson kit. My kit came well packed in an attractive retro art style box.

All parts were molded crisp and clean, and the chrome is outstanding. I did notice however, that the body had sort of a rough texture to it, requiring extra fine sanding to smooth. I did hear that early production kits suffered from this, but apparently it's now been taken care of by the manufacturer.

The instructions are in glossy color form, and offer lots of building information, but are somewhat vague on attachment points of some parts. In order to replicate factory stock correctly, the steering wheel and column will need some careful masking and painting, as they are incorrectly molded in chrome.

For several years now, Academy Plastic Model Company has been producing a series of kid-friendly kits based on the designs of Leonardo Da Vinci. I love these little kits. I have the armored car in my office as a conversation piece. These are, perhaps, more toys than traditional model kits but are a perfect kind of kit to introduce kids to modeling. This particular kit is modeled after Leonardo’s air screw. According to da-vinci-inventions.com, Da Vinci sketched out his air screw in the 15th century. The screw was manufactured from linen, wire, and reeds and was to be rotated by a crew of four men. It was never constructed and would have been an impractical flying machine to say the least. Nevertheless, it is testament to Da Vinci’s genius.

The parts are packaged in a thin plastic sleeve, and the resin is protected by additional reinforcement ribs. Four control levers (sticks) are provided, but the kit requires only two.

Compared to the Hobby Boss (HB) kit parts, the Quickboost (QB) has great improvement on detail over the HB part. The most noticeable difference is the grip shape itself giving crisp detail and accurate contours. Another area of improvement is the grip pivot (roll) accurately replicating that unique pivot. The HB part is very basic where the QB part has finer detail as well as small wiring provided in the casting.
