Model Art Modeling Magazine, #892, May 2014

Published:
Company: Model Art

Model Art Modeling Magazine is a monthly magazine that covers aircraft, armor, ships and car modeling. Model Art started releasing magazines in 1966 and has evolved from there over the past forty six years.

Each issue of Model Art consists of a multitude of articles that reach out to all genres of modelers. From what I see, Model Art makes small changes to its format to keep each issue up to date and interesting to the reader.

Each issue of Model Art Magazine has one feature article and several monthly series. The main article in this issue focuses on the Ki-100. The Ki-100 was a Ki-61 with a redesigned airframe to accept a Mitsubishi engine, which resulted in one of the best interceptors that the Japanese had in their arsenal. The Ki… more

US Scooter - Fire Fighter

Published:
Company: Plusmodel

Aeroline over the past several months has released several different variants of the Cushman scooter. This version is the "Deluxe Auto-Glide" that was used for firefighting operations around airfields. The Fire Fighter version came with a sidecar and four CO fire extinguishers. This was one of the reasons that I wanted to the review of this model as I am a firefighter.

Getting to the model. The kit comes packaged in a clear plastic container with a cardboard insert. There are twelve resin parts, seven photo etch parts, one brass wire, one soft wire and a decal sheet. The resin parts in my example were free of any bubbles and clean up was easy from the pour stubs with one exception. The portion of the decking forms a triangle and there is a pour stub attached to it. I… more

U.S. 101st Airborne Division Normandy 1944

Published:
Company: MiniArt

MiniArt is a Ukraine company that was established in 2001 and released their first kit in 2003. They are well known for their Diorama series, but the have released many armored vehicles, figure sets and accessory sets over the past several years.

This figure set comes in a end opening cardboard box. The instructions for assembling the figures is on the rear of the box. The kit comes with two sprues and these contain the five figures and equipment for them.

The figures are molded in a light grey plastic. There is just a slight amount of flash on the parts, with the biggest issue being the clean up of mold lines. The figures are pretty well detailed, just be careful in your clean up of the mold lines as you might lose some details. Painting instructions and paints are… more

Model Art - Air Model Special No. 04: Imperial Japanese Navy Interceptors

Published:
Company: Model Art

This is one of Model Art Modeling Magazine special editions. The text is mainly in Japanese with some English subtitles throughout. One feature of these magazines is the high quality of the photographs and the models.

Model Art has done it again. Back in April 2013 they released "Air War Over Vietnam U.S. Navy Aircraft Part 1". This is the third followup and they have made some changes to the layout from the excellent first issue.

The magazine is laid out in several sections. The sections consist of mostly Japanese writing, but there is some English captions and wonderful color photographs.

The first couple pages consist of new releases that will soon hit the market and a New Kit Selection article. It features three of Airfix's new tool kits, the 1/48… more

311 Squadron

Published:
Book Author(s): Pavel Vancata; Illustrator: Marek Radomski
Company: Mushroom Model Publications - MMP Books

This is the first publication from MMP that I have had the opportunity to read. I found the book very informative and look forward to reading other offerings from this publisher.

The RAF 311 bomber squadron was the second Czechoslovak combat squadron within the RAF and it was the only one composed completely of Czechoslovakian members. It was formed in 1940 and served until the end of the war in 1945.

This book covers how the Czechoslovakians escaped the Germans and made their way through Europe, exiting Dunkirk and making it to the UK. From there they begin their induction into the RAF and begin flying bombing missions with the first coming in September 1940 against a marshalling yard in Brussels. The unit suffered high losses with mixed results in the beginning, but… more

This set comes in a end opening cardboard box and it contains six sprues of parts molded in a light gray plastic. The molding is clean with no flash, but there are a few minor mold lines that will need to be removed on some of the parts. The attachment points on the parts to the sprue have been well thought out even though some are on the large side. This should make clean up easy. These pieces have a high degree of detail even though some are relatively small.

What comes in the kit is as follows:
