WWII German Aircraft Armament
ICM has released a plethora of German medium bombers in the He-111, Ju-88s and Do-17 family. It is only natural to include bombs for them! What do you do if you don’t necessarily want the big kit? Or you want to add to your diorama? Well, ICM helps you out with sets like this one. It comes in a sturdy cardboard box with a cover bearing a nice photo of the contents.
Unusual for me is the inclusion of torpedoes. The instructions are on two separate sheets: one for the bombs and one for the torpedoes. They are printed on high-quality paper with full color painting instructions/decal placement. A sheet of decals is included. They look and work perfectly. There are six sprues of light grey plastic that is flash free. The grey is a little soft. That is a good/bad thing. Good when gluing but a bit of a challenge when cleaning up small and thin pieces.More on that later.
There are four identical sprues of light grey plastic that include EIGHT SC-50s, EIGHT SD-50s with dinort fuses, FOUR SC-250s, FOUR SD-250s with the option of having dinort fuses, FOUR SC-500s, and FOUR SD-500s. That’s 32 bombs! You can do a lot with those. Each bomb comes with decals specific for particular variants. The dinort fuses for the SC-250 are an option. Another option is the inclusion of the bomb whistles that can be placed on the tail fins of whatever bomb you want.
The other option is the inclusion of TWO WWII German Torpedo and Trailer. This has a separate instruction sheet. There are two sprues of light grey. The torpedoes themselves are really easy to build. The trailers are a bit more of a challenge. There are some thin railings that require a little clean up and they break easily. Luckily, they repair fairly easily. I did have to fill the trailer railings slightly to make them seamless but it was very easy and looks quite convincing.
Assembly is quite easy, if not a little time consuming. After all there are 32 bombs and two torpedoes with two trailers. The bombs are built up in halves with a tail fin insert. Then the strengthening strips on the tail are added. This was actually easier than I anticipated. You have to insure that they are square, which is not difficult. I used ZERO filler on any of the bombs or the torpedoes. The only filler was on the trailer where the railings met up.
Painting allows you a lot of options as well. You can paint them RLM70, Dark Grey or Desert Yellow. I used Tamiya colors throughout. A gloss coat of Tamiya Clear with Mr. Leveling Thinner prepped the bombs for decals. The decals performed well as long as you use lots of water to float them on the bombs. They settled down with Solvaset and sealed with Aclad Flat.
The torpedoes are steel with gun metal nose cones. The props are brass and the wooden tail covers are painted in Deck Tan and given a wooden appearance with some burnt sienna artist oils. The trailers are given an overall German Grey with Tamiya Rubber wheels. The trailers are sealed in Alclad Flat Coat. I left the torpedoes in their natural metal finish.
Since I wasn’t sure where I was going to use the bombs or torpedoes. I did not weather them. Once I figure out where I need them, I’ll weather them appropriately, maybe desert dust or winter snow or just plain dirt.
Overall, this is an awesome offering. I enjoyed the build. The bombs and torpedoes will add to either my German bomber models or my dioramas. There are 32 bombs and two torpedoes with trailers. It is a fun build and everything looks great. Another winner from ICM and getting the most out of their molds. I love it.
Highly recommended
Thanks to ICM and IPMS/USA for the review copy.
