First off, I would like to thank both Caracal Models and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review these decals.

Caracal Models has released their second set of decals for the Wolfpack 1/48 T-38A Talon. As you will see in my review for the Trumpeter T-38A, they can also be used on Trumpeter’s version with no modification. This sheet of decals includes nine separate options for the T-38A Talon.

  • T-38A 69-7073, 80th FTW, Sheppard AFB
  • T-38A 68-8112, 12th FTW, Willians AFB
  • T-38A 63-8221, 82nd TFW, Williams AFB
  • T-38A 66-4359, 47th FTW, Williams AFB
  • T-38A 66-8403, Randolph AFB
  • T-38A 62-3652, 52nd FTS, Reese AFB
  • T-38A 70-1554, blue-white camouflage, Randolph AFB
  • T-38A 65-10379, 64th FWS aggressor, Nellis AFB
  • T-38A 64-13192, 64th FWS aggressor, Nellis AFB

The sheet was printed by Cartograf and the colors are excellent. The decals themselves are very thin. There are enough markings provided to make two aircraft, which is to say that if you do one of the trainers and one of the “aggressors” you will have enough for two aircraft—there is only one set each of the large and small “Star and Bar” roundels. The directions also give you the paint colors you need in their FS numbers. I chose to use Model Master Enamels.

The decals can also be used for the Trumpeter 1/48 T-38A Talon, and I chose to do the T-38A of the 64th Aggressor Squadron out of Nellis AFB in 1976 wearing the “grape” scheme, which is a four color camouflage that looks like a Russian aircraft paint scheme. It is made up of FS 35414 Blue, FS 35109 Blue, FS 35164 Intermediate Blue, and FS 35622 Duck Egg Blue. This is option eight of the nine possible options. The decals went on great with just a slight need for Testors Decal Set and Solvent. I did have one decal that silvered (the upper wing “USAF”), but that was more due to my own fault of not getting it smoothed out correctly than the decal itself. It is also not very noticeable unless you look at it in the right light.

These decals are highly recommended! My thanks to Caracal Models for providing the review sample and to IPMS/USA for the chance to review these decals.
