UMM-USA is dedicated to fine-scale modeling, encompassing model kits, accessories, and specialized tools. Owned by John Vojtech, a fine-scale modeling veteran. UMM-USA is an online store, importing and exports kits, modeling tools, and supplies, and seeks and offers solutions to technical issues. In addition, his services currently include design and production of master parts, casting of original masters, photo-etched masks, decals, and building made-to-order models for customers. You can see a sampling of John Vojtech's finished projects in the Our Gallery section of his website.

John Vojtech was born near Prague, in the Czech Republic, and currently lives in Deerfield near Chicago, Illinois USA, with his family. As a young boy, John was taught about modeling by his father. This passion for modeling led him to later teach modeling theory and practice at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. What has long been a hobby is now his profession. Drawing upon his success, John has expanded into new fields, offering consulting services, teaching, seminars, exhibitions, as well as continuing to teach modeling theory and practice to the young generation interested in this work. John Vojtech is also a member of IPMS / USA International Plastic Modelers' Society (National), member of IPMS / Richard I. Bong Chapter (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), IPMS / Lakes Region Scale Modelers (Crystal Lake, Illinois), IPMS / Butch O'Hare Chapter (Downers Grove, Illinois) as well as AMPS Armour Modeling Preservation Society (Illinois).

The UMM40 Ultra Micro Chisel features a hardened tool steel blade with a 2mm wide, 3.5 mm elliptical-shaped tip. The 5.5” ergonomic knurled plastic handle provides a good grip to easily control the blade. A good addition that John has added is the plastic guard to protect the blade. I’ve used this chisel on standard injected plastic parts, cast resin, and 3D printed resin. I have used it both as a cutting blade and as a scraping edge with great results either way. The edge is quite sharp and takes little effort to remove mold lines. As a chisel, it can easily remove pin marks, especially in tight, deeply recessed areas. I can easily see it being of value in removing molded-on cockpit detail in preparation for 3D decals from Eduard or Quinta. This chisel can also be used as a cutting tool to create grooved lines or louvers in plastic parts. You won’t need to press hard for it to cut, which is a good thing. When using chisels, it’s always better not to hurry. Proceed with a light touch, then follow up with increased pressure on additional passes until you are satisfied. It is easier to make an additional pass than to dig too deep and make a mess. I have been using several different-sized UMM doubled beveled Ultra Micro Chisels for a few years now and they have remained sharp. This elliptical Ultra Micro Chisel is available in 1.5mm, 2.00mm, 2.50mm, and 3.00mm separately or all five sizes as a set.

Having the proper tools for your project will help you to achieve a higher level of quality for your “build”. UMM-USA tools fill that role. Those of you who attend the next IPMS Nationals, you should find this at UMM-USA’s table, and John Votech will be happy to give you a demonstration. If you can’t wait till then, you can also find it on his website above. This product is a superb tool based on the high quality of the cutting point, comfort, ergonomics, and ease of use.

Highly recommended!

My thanks to John Vojtech and UMM-USA, along with IPMS/USA, for the chance to review this great modeling tool.
