Saab J79B/F Tunnan Landing Gear for the Fly Kit
When I received this set, I thought the parts were too small to be 1/32 scale. Turns out the Tunnan has a round fuselage with all the gear contained within it. This allows for very short landing gear legs. SAC appears to have duplicated the kit parts in their usual soft white metal. My research indicates the landing gear in the base kit is tricky to install, so don’t expect the fit you might get from other brands these days. I also read comments about the need for stronger main gear legs since the completed model has a bit of heft to it.
As for the parts themselves, some clean-up is required on the nose gear oleo scissors, as the area inside is solid. I would suggest pinning the retraction strut to the main gear leg for the best joint and strength. Some wire and a pin vice drill will take care of that. The main gear legs on this aircraft are not vertical, so solid mounting points are a must. As a bonus SAC provides two pitot’s for the wing leading edges that don’t appear to be in the base kit.
In conclusion, this set will require a bit of preparation before use, but this is a good application for metal parts.
Thanks to SAC for the review sample and to IPMS for allowing me the chance to review it.
