References for Modelers #12 Dornier Do 17Z
If you have never opened a Kagero Book, be advised they are some of the most informative out there. In many cases, a decal of the subject aircraft is included as a “bonus” within the pages… A truly worthwhile investment if your subject matter is covered. For Kagero’s staff, IPMS is grateful for your contribution and fully appreciate your support!
Kagero addresses more than a few subjects in their voluminous catalog… one can browse them for a long time and wish for all the time and funds to build models their titles address. I have used some of their specialist titles (such as the P-38 in Pacific Service) to great effect; the profile artwork provides ample impetus to build the subject, and Kagero’s decals ensure a subject out of the mainstream will be the result.
In this case, Kagero’s “References for Modelers” addresses the DO-17Z; a worthy subject, with several models available from vintage “Monogram” (1/72, 1968 or so) all the way to the newer releases by ICM. I happen to have one of the Eduard limited releases, and have held off on addressing the subject until the desire to build hit me.
This book rapidly moved the kit up in the queue. From the beginning, interior shots, different variants and variations in armament (I didn’t realize some had field installed side-forward mounted MG-17’s in the upper canopy area… Like a B-17 cheek .50 cal, but with a metal frame to prevent overzealous gunners from shooting their own propellers from the side vantage point). The basic two green upper side splinter camouflage and blue belly were the norm, and here is where the enclosed decal sheet comes into play.
The book contains three-view (with fourth lower outer wing panel) artwork for a DO 17A-2 coded 3&+Fu of 10./ZG 26 “Horst Wessel”, based in the Western desert of Libya in autumn, 1941. RLM 78/79/60 to finish with green mottle and the Geshwader’s emblem. The decal sheet provides this marking in 1/48 and 1/72 to address the available models.
Throughout the book, wartime images abound, and the multiple angle technical drawings by Mariusz Lukaslk © 2016 are provided in 1/72 scale, addressing the myriad changes through the first part of the war.
I am using this book as intended; the Polish language, supplemented by English, are all appropriate and contain the detail required. THANKS AGAIN to Kagero for another fantastic title!
