This Beaufighter decal set is one of the latest from Canadian-based Aviaeology – SkyGrid Studio’s line of model-related products.

Upon first opening up the standard ziplock plastic bag that holds the decals and instructions, I was immediately impressed with the quality of the decals. There are 4 sheets included in this set, covering 4 aircraft (3 of which have multiple variations). In addition to the individual aircraft markings, a full set of national markings and stencil data is provided for one aircraft. These decals look first-rate, with little to no carrier film except where absolutely necessary. The decals themselves have a glossy finish and appear quite thin, but with good color density.

Even more impressive is the instruction sheet itself. Aviaeology has included a black and white printed instruction manual comprising over 16 pages. Among the instructions is an insert with directions on emailing the company to obtain a full-color PDF of the manual. I emailed and very shortly received a reply with the PDF attached. This seems a good way for them to keep the cost of the printing down, but at the same time offer a seriously comprehensive instruction sheet.

This sheet covers the following Beaufighter TF.X aircraft:

• LZ451 (3 variations) codes 2*M and EE*M
• NE355 (2 variations) codes 2*H and EE*H
• NE825 codes 2*G when radar equipped
• NV173 (2 variations) codes EE*X

Three pages are dedicated to a discussion of colors and finishes, with generic profiles indicating camouflage patterns and stenciling (as well as notes on various details of the airframe). Next comes several pages covering the above-mentioned aircraft. Profiles, photos, and extensive notes on airframe specifics and various details are presented. The authors go to great lengths to document the subject markings, and explain their process within the text. Finally, there are four pages showing extensive details of the rocket projectiles, their colors, and mounting installation. Both drawings and photographs are used.

This a set that just exudes quality in research and presentation, as well as in the decals themselves. The research has clearly been extensive, making this one of the best booklets I have seen included with a decal set. If you have any doubts how nice the black and white copy is, just wait until you see it in full color!

Wholeheartedly recommend! I have now also bookmarked the Aviaeology website to monitor for any new releases. Decals produced by this company come out in relatively limited supply, so I would suggest not hesitating if you find a subject you like.
