This set is designed to be used with Modelsvit’s Ye-152 experimental aircraft. The set consists of 5 resin parts providing the portion of the exhaust section of the engine aft of the rear compressor blades. Cast in a light grey resin, the parts exhibit exquisite detail, however, other than the flame-holder for the afterburner and the actual nozzle part, all the details are on the inside of the exhaust tube and are finely rendered.

The resin used by Amigo Models is of a medium hardness that is comparable to the injected plastic used in Airfix’s new kits which makes it easy to cut, but not so fragile as to collapse or shatter when cut. I use fine razor saw to separate the parts from the pour stubs and a medium grit (400) sanding stick to clean up the cut edges. I then soaked the parts in Simple Green to remove any mold release agent.

The instructions clearly show how much of the pour plug is to be removed, but I must fess up that I did not remove all the plug for the flame-holder. The main reason is that I was very worried about damaging the flame-holder when trying to remove the angled section of the pour stub. I also discovered that once the flame-holder was inserted into the initial stage of the exhaust tube, the remainder of the pour stub was not visible.

One disappointment with the instructions is that there are no painting instructions on them. I did some online research and discovered that a version of the R15B engine powered the MiG-25 Foxbat. Fortunately, I was able to find some photos of these engines, including one that appears to show a bright green color in the exhaust tube. I used the Mr. Hobby bright green Eduard recommends for its MiG-21 antennas and radome to the interior color of the engine. I painted the exhaust petals and the exterior of the exhaust tube Testor’s steel. I applied a black panel wash inside the exhaust tube and on the exhaust petals to make the details stand out.

I was pleasantly surprised with this set as the cast detail is outstanding and the resin is easily cut and sanded. I now have to start stalking Ebay to get the Modelsvit kit to install it in.’

Recommended. Thank you to Amigo Models for the sample and to IPMS for letting me try it.
