The Prehistoric Scenes kits were first issued (from what I can find) in 1971 or before so the kit is over 50 years old. Looking inside the box, the kit comes with two small bases and a tree along with the star of the show, the Sabre Tooth Tiger. The molds have been cleaned up and there is pretty much no flash at all. The plastic is a very nostalgic yellow and if you are my age, you remember the planes and kits of the time being this bright color.

Since I built this kit decades ago, I wanted to do something a little different so I reversed the layout a bit as the tiger looks mad and I wanted him jumping at you attacking. So if you look the kit up on the Internet, mine may look backwards but I like it in attack mode.

There are really to parts to assemble- the tree and the tiger. I was not expecting great fit but I can say, using the clamps and Tamiya glue, there were not too much trouble with the tree or tiger. Lots of clamps really helped to minimize the seams. The tiger was 4 legs and the body was the rest. Once the five parts were dry, I sanded and filled the few remaining seams. I then used a line scriber from UMM to replicate the missing fur. Adding the legs to the kit took some patience and I did change the stance by rotating the legs upward. The fit OK but did need putty and sanding. There are also some prominent seams on the top of the head that needed sanded too.

The tree was more of the same with clamps and sanding so nothing new here.

I used all sorts of Tamiya Acrylics and painted the bases sand color, the rocks several shades of gray and the miscellaneous parts bone and brown. Lots of oil washed and then drybrushed and the bases were complete. The tree was painted brown and green and then washed and drybrushed too and added to the base.

Our star, I went for a basic lion look with white highlight and I found an old bottle of Aeromaster German brown and used that for the fur. I added washed and dry brushing and then hand painted the mouth and the eyes and face.

To mount him, I drilled holes in his back feet and glued coat hanger wire into place and glued him like he was leaping off the rock.

This was a trip through history for me and the options for painting are unlimited. Make him spotted if you like. Definitely recommended to modelers of all ages for fun!

My thanks to Atlantis for the opportunity to review the kit.
