Monograph 36, Curtiss P-40, Volume 1
The book is paperback, 8-1/4” x 12”, has 64 pages of text and black & white photos, 17 pages of profile and 4-view line drawings in 1/48 scale, seven pages of profile and 4-view line drawings in 1/72 scale, and eight color profiles and three 4-view color profiles. It is listed on the publisher’s website with a price of Euro 28.50.
The text is divided into four main sections:
- Introduction and model descriptions; covering the US Army Air Corps status in the mid-1930s followed by the initial Curtiss response to the US Army contest for a new fighter aircraft, followed by descriptions of the XP-40, the series production P-40, H-81C1 and Tomahawk Mk IA, the P40B and Tomahawk Mk IIA, the P-40C and Tomahawk Mk IIB, the P-40D and Kittyhawk Mk I, and finally, the P-40E and Kittyhawk Mk lA. Clear black and white photographs are provided for each model
- Operational Service; the Royal Air Force, Stalin’s Falcon, and Debut at Pearl Harbor. Multiple black and white photographs are included to support the narrative
- End Notes
- Bibliography
The text is followed by 24 pages of line drawings, both profile and 4-view, of each model covered in the text. Additionally, the line drawings include cross-sections for fuselages and wings with details for instrument panels, wheels and other small details.
The book is finished with eight color profiles, with examples from the three sir services mentioned in the text, and three 4-view color profiles.
The text is clear and easy to read, but informative. The photographs are abundant and many are candid with possibilities for dioramas. The line drawings clearly show the differences between each of the models.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the early models of the Curtiss P-40, and for those interested in aviation history. Thanks to Kagero for the chance to review it.
