Hauler-Brengun is well known as a supplier of high-quality aftermarket detail parts for aircraft, as well as other subjects. Many of these aftermarket items are resin, P.E., or a combination of the two mediums.

Marketed under the “Brengun” label, this review looks at the Brengun BR48107 Mark 24 Mine “Fido” Torpedo. The name is a little confusing. Is it a mine or a torpedo? A little history is appropriate at this point.

Googling Mk.24 Mine “Fido” Torpedo received a number of hits. I chose the Wikipedia site and the explanation for the name, as well as a description of the “Fido” and its operational history. The following paraphrases the introductory paragraph found on the Wiki site.

“Fido” is not a mine at all but is actually an air-dropped passive acoustic homing anti-submarine torpedo. Entering service in 1943, Fido is credited with sinking 37 Axis submarines and damaging an additional 18 subs. In order to obfuscate “Fido’s” real nature, it was termed a mine. It’s one thing to know that there is a minefield but at least the mines are fairly static. It’s a totally different issue to realize that this weapon can be air-dropped and that it will then hunt you down rather than being tethered to one location.

Fido is a quick and easy “build”. I’m not that proficient with resin and p.e. parts, but this project proved to the easily in my “skill range”. The torpedo body is resin. All other parts are photo-etched. Little effort is required to remove the torpedo from the resin carrier in just a minute or two and can be sanded smooth with no issues. I used a p.e. bender to shape the fins, as directed by the instructions. In short, the torpedo went from package to “fully assembled” in about 30 minutes.

For the purpose of this review, I chose not to paint “Fido”. The instruction sheet in the product package contains information about color choices.

This product is highly recommended due to the clarity of the “instruction” sheet, ease of assembly, and the reasonable price of the product. Thanks to Brengun for making this product available to IPMS/USA for review.
