This is another of Ampersand Group’s Visual History Series using high-quality photography to show subjects in detail and in action. These books are excellent resources for modelers looking for formation and details on specific vehicles. This book, by the prolific author David Doyle, covers the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) popularly known as the Humvee.

The two-page Introduction discusses the history of development of the Humvee, and then briefly describes some of the 40 models in its development. Several models of predecessors in early variations are included. The Humvee has evolved from its original function as a soft skin utility vehicle to serve many other functions, including an armored combat vehicle.

The book focuses on and includes a chapter on each of the following variations:

• M1038
• M1025
• M1044
• Avenger
• M997
• M1151A1
• M1165A1
• M1152A1 with B2 SECM
• Field Use – In action photos of vehicles

Each of the chapters contains high quality photos, both overall images of various vehicle configurations, plus many detailed photographs that will be very helpful to modelers. The chapter on the M1038 is over 40 pages long, and includes many photographs of a body-off vehicle frame that will be a great resource for modelers.

The Avenger chapter includes an Avenger Low-Level Air Defense System mounted on a Humvee. The chapter includes 11 pages of photographs of the missile system. The M997 is one of the Maxi ambulance families of Humvees.

The M1151A1 chapter is a vehicle with the B1 kit, an armament carrier version of the Humvee. The roof has a gunner protection kit. This chapter includes many detail photographs of the exterior, some excellent photographs of the engine, and many great photographs of the interior of the vehicle. The M1165A1 version is a command and control vehicle.

The Field Use chapter is 13 pages of vehicles in various use situations, including photos of battle damaged vehicles. Several of these photographs are interesting diorama possibilities.
