One of the newest titles in Squadron’s Walk Around series is the Heinkel He-111. As with other titles in this series, this softcover book is in a “landscape” format and features loads of detail photos of all aspects of the He-111.

Similar to other books in this series, there is a one-page introduction covering a brief history of the aircraft, and a short discussion of the few remaining airframes. This is followed by about 88 pages of detail photos and accompanying descriptive text. All the photos are very crisp and clear, covering about ¼ of a page each. Most of these are photos of museum aircraft, but there are several WW2-era photos that show some clear details.

The bulk of museum aircraft photos are of a He-111P-2 in the Gardermoen Museum in Oslo, which has been fully restored to its original configuration. Photos of almost any possible detail area (both inside and out) a modeler would want are provided.

Scattered throughout are line drawings to describe the development of various aspects of the He-111 over time. Scrap views of the development of the nose design, bomb bay doors, defensive armament positions, and much more are provided. Full page 3-view drawings are also provided for the He-111B, H-6 and H-20 variants.

The other museum aircraft with photo coverage is the He-111H-20/R1 (converted to H-23 standards) from the RAF Museum in London. This was originally in the possession of the USAAF 56th Fighter Group immediately after the war. This aircraft has only been restored externally, and was originally a transport (the /R1 designation) and thus has no bomb bay.

Following the great number of photos of museum aircraft, there are 4 pages of nicely-illustrated color profiles. These show a wide variety of color schemes and should provide some nice modeling inspiration (at least they did to me). This last section of the book also has 5 pages of black and white photos of operational He-111s.

While original period photos of all details on an aircraft would be great, this is the next best thing. Nice, clear color photos of the many details modelers like to see can often only be provided in this manner. I think this is an excellent one-stop reference for those seeking detail information about the He-111. With the recent 1/32nd release by Revell, this book is particularly timely. I can highly recommend it.
