Box Art / Packaging

The ICM Paint set for Ancient Warriors (ITEM 3068) is presented in a stiff glossy cardboard sleeve and contains 6 12ml paint pots. Box art depicts a Roman Centurion on the front with depictions on the rear of a Roman Centurion and a Roman Gladiator with recommendations for use of the colors provided for each.

The Kit / Paints

The provided paints are presented in small 12ml plastic pots with screw tops and each lid also clearly depicting the color and color ID which is useful for storage. In this case we are provided with Paint# 1019 (Rusty Brass), 1020 (Bronze), 1024 (Silver), 1026 (Oily Steel), 1047 (Matt Red) and 1053 (Leather Brown). No ball bearings are added to the paint for easier shaking/mixing, however the paint pots are small and vigorous shaking is sufficient to prepare appropriately.

The Build / Paint Use

To test out these paints, I 3D printed a crude representation of a Roman Soldier as my test subject.

I applied a base coat of Tamiya German Grey as a base over the black PLA 3D print (I was using it for another model so it was just the easiest option!).

All colors were then applied in various stages to the test subject and application was done purely with brush (the box suggests the paint is prepared for brush painting but can be thinned suitably for use in Airbrush if so desired). In this case I actually consulted some pictures from the internet to use as examples of painting Roman Centurion rather than rely on the instructions from the reverse of the ICM box.

I applied the matt red to the helmet plume and cloak, using silver and oily steel for the armor plate and leather brown for shoulder guards.

For the armor breastplate I used rusty brass also using this same color for the plume support. The main body of the helmet was painted with bronze.

No additional detailing was done as the purpose here was to test the colors and see the basic results. One noticeable omission here was no flesh colors to complete the face/skin on any model, in my case this meant my subject remained German Grey in the face.

Pros

  • Well packaged.
  • Good price point seems appropriate for the provided paints.
  • Good viscosity paint for brush application.
  • No need for lots of coats, coverage is very good.

Cons

  • It should be packaged with a flesh tone.
  • Ball bearings in the pots may make for easier mixing of the paint.

Many thanks to ICM for providing the paints and to IPMS for facilitating the review.
