History and Research

The Chevrolet Corvette has become a familiar star at the annual running of the Indianapolis 500. The subject model of this review is the 2008 version of the Corvette or “C6” model. It was the 10th Corvette chosen to pace the annual May Indy 500 race. The 2008 Pace car celebrated the 30 year anniversary of the first Corvette to pace Indy. This 2008 model was styled after the 1978 (C3 model), complete with black over silver.

The Build

As this is an unassembled promo style kit, the build was very straight forward. I started by painting the as molded black plastic body with Tamiya TS-14 gloss black. I have found Tamiya rattle can acrylic lacquers go on very well and even, the spray pattern is somewhat mist –like and lays down very well without runs. The chassis pan is very simple; I just shot it with flat black from a spray bomb. The interior tub and dash were air-brushed with Tamiya semi-gloss black, additionally I masked the windshield frame with blue painters tape covering the inside and clear window part outside before shooting it with Tamiya SGB. The two seats are molded in a black soft rubbery plastic. I should have painted those seats with a light grey acrylic paint per the original but instead I left them in their as-molded black. I have successfully painted seats like these with Tamiya acrylics and it sticks, however it is fairly easy to chip off but can be touched up easily enough. After painting the exhaust tips and brake rotors gloss black and then overcoated with Alclad chrome, the model was pretty much ready to assemble. The tail light lenses were painted Tamiya clear red and after painting the dash it was decaled.

There were no fit issues when it came time to put all of the pieces together prior to decaling the car body. The decalling process was pain free; all of the decals went on very well including the large “billboard” side decals.

Conclusion

This is a great little kit to put together whether you build snap-tight models for yourself or with your grandkids as I do right out of the box or you want to make a great looking shelf model to commemorate the Indy experience this one is for you. And yes my 6 and 7 year old grandsons’ love being able to build a snapper kit, of course grandpa helps out with the decals.
