This set is designed to be used on Academy’s new F-14A Tomcat kit. The set consists of 6 resin parts and 2 photo-etched parts which allows you to assemble a pair of exhaust nozzles for the kit. Each nozzle assembly is comprised of a section with the rearmost fan blades, the flame-holder for the afterburner, the exhaust pipe and the exhaust nozzle. As noted in the title, the nozzles are varied, one is fully opened and one is fully closed, shore-based Tomcats normally appear in this configuration.

Fighting Ships of the US Navy is a series dedicated to exploring each ship in the US Navy’s inventory since 1883. In Volume One, the author, Venner F Milewski, Jr., starts with the Fleet Aircraft Carriers in the beginning. Overall, the book has a plethora of data and information of each aircraft carrier used by the US during the last 100 years starting with the USS Langley. Taking a look at the Table of contents shows what I mean:

There is an old axiom that amateurs pursue tactics, but professionals manage logistics. It is a topic that largely goes unexplored in the voluminous literature of the Second World War. Outside of the modeling world, I am an academically trained military historian who works in the public history field. I have had a keen interest in the topic. Given my background, I was keen to review this work. From a production point of view, Pen and Sword knows what they are doing – high quality binding, heavy paper, and well produced photographs, contemporary to the war and modern, color photographs of restored vehicles form the Second World War. My criticisms are with the content.

Round 2 has reissued the 1/25th scale Milk Trike kit and it is great to see it again. MPC was a very popular model company in the 1960’s and 70’s and thankfully, Round 2 has saved their molds. The Milk Trike was one of six trike kits which came with different window colors and extensive decals to customize your build.

Inside the box, there are 57 easy to build parts molded in white, chrome and three colors of windows- clear, transparent purple and transparent orange. There are preprinted black tires and a large decals sheet giving many options. I decided up front to stick with the Milk Trike theme and try to duplicate the purple color in Alclad Candy colors.

Brengun Models is a scale model and detailing parts manufacturer located in the Czech Republic. Their lines include limited production run multi-media kits and exquisitely detailed photoetch, turned brass, and white metal replacement parts for aircraft in the most commonly produced scales.

Brengun has produced a set of wheels with ribbed tread patterns for any 1/72 scale F4U Corsair. There are no instructions, and any modeler familiar with resin parts will have no issues installing these wheels in lieu of the kit parts. A close-up evaluation of the parts (see photos), indicates a simple cut and replace installation that provides realistic scale-detailed wheels with significantly improved appearance to molded plastic kit parts.

Aires, a company out of Czechoslovakia, continues to create wonderful detail parts with the release of their 4-spoke Spitfire main wheels and masks, intended for the Tamiya kit. Cast in a medium gray styrene, they capture the most minute details, from the Dunlop letters to the exceptionally fine ribbing along the rims of the tires to the air valves.

As always seems to be the case with this manufacturer, the casting is absolutely flawless. A set of vinyl masks with clear, detailed instructions in their use are also included to permit you to make the best use of these detail parts.

There is simply no way to go wrong with these detail parts. They are straight “drop-in” replacements for the original kit tires and definitely add something to the final build. Frankly, they just cannot be beat.

My thanks to Aires Hobby Models for the sample and to IPMS/USA for a chance to add these to my own build of this iconic aircraft.

ICM has recently started a trend of boxing several different kits under a single title, a useful way of boosting sales of certain items in their inventory. One such boxing is the “Wehrmacht 3-Axle Trucks” set, which includes three different heavy truck kits of various vintages. Personally, I like this trend, as it provides the modeler with a host of material to work with at a relatively low price. Perhaps the only downside to the marketing for this specific set is the cover art, which is perhaps the dullest model box top I’ve ever seen.

Aires, a company out of Czechoslovakia, continues to create wonderful detail parts with the release of their Bf-108 wheel and mask set, intended for the Eduard kit. This set includes replacement parts for all three wheels, which are cast in a grey resin which captures the fine detail extraordinarily well. In addition, masks are included to aid in painting the wheels, along with detailed illustrated instructions in their use.

The casting is flawless and displays details right down to the molded lettering on the tires. There is literally nothing I can fault with this set, and they should add to the Eduard kit immensely. This is aftermarket quality at its finest.

I really don’t think you can go wrong with this detail set – it will simply enhance your work and add that “little something” we’re all looking for. Highly recommended.

My thanks to Aires Hobby Models for the sample and to IPMS/USA for a chance to add this to my own build.
