De Haviland Hornet F.1

Published:
Company: Trumpeter

Trumpeter from China has released the first of a series of boxings for the deHavilland Hornet. This boxing represents the Mk.1F, with two other boxings scheduled for release later this year.

Upon opening the box you find 7 sprues (one clear) with about 80 parts in sharp and flash free plastic. Also a decal sheet for two finishing options - both overall silver - is provided.

I have read in British websites that there are some shape issues around the nose, the fuselage length and with panel lines that should not be there. I am not an expert on the Hornet, so I cannot speak to that. Please do your own research on the accuracy component of this model.

Assembly of this model is very straight forward, with solid engineering in mind. As usual you start with the cockpit… more

Beaufighter Operator Canopy Set

Published:
Company: Res-Im

The Beaufighter crew/operator canopy was attached to the fuselage panels and during maintenance -or emergencies- the panels could unfastened and the canopy would swing open to the side (the crew would normally enter via a hatch in the fuselage floor).

This detail set provides you with two canopy sets, one for the “observer” configuration and another one for the “rear gunner” of the Beaufighter. I believe the observer configuration (radar operator) was only used in the MkV/NF version of the Beaufighter.

The canopies are casted in clear resin. Please note that this replacement part includes some sharply casted detail in the panels surrounding the canopies as well. In order to use this set you are expected to remove some plastic from the fuselage of the airplane and the… more

Kawasaki KI45KAI Nick Limited Edition

Published:
Company: Hasegawa

Hasegawa has re-released its well-known Ki-45 “Nick” or “Toryu” (Dragon Slayer) as a limited edition with markings for attack units based out of Philippines or the Home Islands.

Like most airplane models you start with the cockpit, which includes separate side panels for better detail. Note in the images that some ejection mark pins need to be filled out in the interior of the fuselage sides, as they won’t be covered by the separate side panels. At the same time those panels have knock-off marks that need to be removed too.

The cockpit floor includes molded-in wings spars that will facilitate wing alignment. In order to get the fuselage sides to close (during dry-fitting) I realized I needed to enlarge the slots in the fuselage sides for the wing spars. That improved… more

American 109G-6

Published:
Company: Delta One Decals

Delta One Decal is a new European Manufacturer of decals. This is a Limited Edition decal sheet that covers 9 captured 109G-6s in American markings. All but one are /Trop version. The other one is a G-6/R3.

The decal sheet has vivid colors, with good color density, it is very shinny –on the sheet- and it perfect register. There is very limited carrier material, so I would expect them to blend in and have a very limited chance for silvering.

The camouflage options go from black with red trims, sand with red wingtips, olive drab, typical mid-war RLM 74/75/76 and even a natural metal finish! Indeed a very unique collection.

There is no indication of which company printed the decals, but they are professionally printed, and they are not of the “continuous carrier… more

HMS Belfast Armament Barrels

Published:
Company: Master Model

Master Model from Poland specializes in metal turned parts for aftermarket kits. In my personal option they are among the best in the market. I really like their products.

This set is devoted to the HMS Belfast and it includes a set of 12 replacement metal barrels for the 6-in guns and a set of 12 replacement metal barrels for the 4-in guns. The parts are very nicely detailed down to the holes on the end of the barrels. It also includes resin correction parts for the 6-in mountings, including some metal pins to keep the parts in place and to allow variable elevation of the guns.

I have to apologize for not being able to get good pictures of all the parts. They are so diminutive that my camera was not able to focus on them. I have included some screen captures from the… more

Crates Set #C1

Published:
Company: Value Gear

Value Gear is an aftermarket company that I have never heard of before. My apologies to Value Gear for that. Now I’m glad I have heard of them as they have some really neat stuff. Reading on their website you can tell it is a business that is run by a modeler who chooses to release items thinking on what a modeler would like to see and use.

This set consists of 49 pieces -all of them casted on dark grey resin- representing at least 9 different shapes of wooden crates. They have nice surface detail, including wood texture on the surfaces. There are no mold casts that need to be removed and you can just start working with them as soon as you take them out of the bag.

I prepared one crate by wiping it down with alcohol and letting it air-dry. Then I painted it with acrylic… more

Model Art - All about Imperial Japanese Navy Battleships 1913-45

Published:
Company: Model Art

ModelArt magazine is a Japanese publication that covers all genres of plastic models. Besides its regular journal articles, it also has special books covering a single subject, in this case IJN Battleships between 1913 and 1945.

Be aware that the full book is in Japanese. There are some very limited English captions, however they are very useful as they list the type of weapon, ship name, timeframe, etc.

This book is divided in 3 main sections.

The first section deals with the weapons of the different battleships, from the heavy cannons in twin and triple turrets, to smaller guns and finally anti-aircraft weapons. Each weapon includes some line drawing(s), period pictures and also an assembled plastic replica, typically in 1/700 scale.

The second section… more
