P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback

Published:
Company: MiniArt

Squadron, in partnership with MiniArt, released this boxing as a Limited Edition at the IPMS/USA Nationals in Hampton, VA. Utilizing the newly released P-47D-11 Razorback kit with new decals, Squadron has created a rather unique model. Having just built a Tamiya P-47D Razorback I was looking forward to building this kit to see how it stacked up. Packaged in a sturdy cardboard box with a colorful box art with two unique 405 Fighter Group aircraft, one in NMF and the other in OD and Neutral Grey. Let’s see what is in the box because that is what really matters.

First off, the instructions are printed in an 8.5 x11 booklet with full color on the cover pages and black and white drawings for the constructions. The simple-to-understand instructions are on 14 pages in 34+ stages. The… more

Kagero’s newest books are designed around the modeler. These small booklets are really nice. The cover is thick cardstock and contains 26 pages of information.

The pages have one or two large photos per page on high-gloss heavyweight paper. In addition to the thirteen great pages of photos, there are two full-color profiles inside and one on the back cover. There are six pages of line drawings starting with the G-3, G-5, and G-6 variants. The drawings are in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

In addition to the great photos, profiles, and line drawings is a decal sheet that features the Bf-109G-6 on the cover, which is also one of the four-view color profiles inside. The decals are in both 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

References for Modellers #3 - Messerschmitt Bf 109D-1

Company: Kagero Publishing

Continuing Kagero’s new series of books aimed at modelers is this volume focusing on the Dora version of the Bf-109. It is packaged in a self-sealing sleeve with a 8.5 x 11 booklet of 26 pages. Included is a small decal sheet.

The cover is heavy card stock and the pages are high quality gloss paper. The format is similar throughout the series. This one is slightly different, however. This volume sports single pages of high-quality images. These large images allow you to see the weathering and wear marks that modelers love.

There are five full color profiles, including the centerfold of a colorful Swiss Bf-109D-1 in red and white stripes. The decals for this machine are included in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

Also unique in this volume is the… more

Safely packaged in a resealable sleeve is a beautiful 8.5 x 11 booklet and a small decal sheet. The booklet contains 25 pages of high-quality paper featuring clear photos. Most pages have two large photos which make details easy to see. A variety of variants are covered in this volume from the early E-1 to the E-3. This period of use for the Bf-109 was quite colorful with a variety of paint schemes. Kagero has shown most of the paint schemes. There are 16 pages of photos, four pages (not including the back cover) of wonderful color profiles. Six aircraft are included in the profile views. There are six pages of line drawings to show the differences and changes in the variants. The drawings are in 1/72nd and 1/48th scale.

Wings of the Allies, the European Air War - Volume One

Published:
Book Author(s): Mark Proulx
Company: Eagle Editions Ltd.

Mark Proulx has amassed an impressive collection of photographs over the years. His previous work with Eagle Editions has produced the highly successful Wings of the Black Cross series. Now Mark and Eagle Editions have expanded the range with this inaugural volume of Wings of the Allies - The European Air War.

If you're familiar with the Wings of the Black Cross series of books, this is exactly the same format: sturdy laminated cover with high-quality paper on the inside. The book features plenty of original photos and eight color profiles on 36 pages.

Since this book covers the allies, it has American, British, and USSR aircraft included. Of course, P-38s, P-47s, P-51s, as well as Ratas and Yaks are included. On the British side of the house there are Hurricanes, Spitfires… more

Wings of the Black Cross - Number Sixteen

Published:
Book Author(s): Wings of the Black Cross- Number Sixteen
Company: Eagle Editions Ltd.

Eagle Editions has been known for their Luftwaffe research for as long as I can remember. With the death of founder Jerry Crandall, it's nice to see that Judy Crandall, his wife, along with Mark Proulx are continuing his legacy with Eagle Editions.

If you are familiar with the Wings of the Black Cross series, this book is similar to the entire series. Focusing on German aircraft, primarily on the Jagdwaffe, however, it does include other aircraft. The 8.5 x 11 laminated cover book is printed on 36 pages on high quality gloss paper. There are 64 high quality photographs included in the book.

Included in the book are Bf-109, Bf-110, FW-190, Me-262, Stukas, and He-177, as well as many more. The periods covered go all the way from the birth of the Luftwaffe to the end of the… more

ICM WWII German Aircraft Armament

WWII German Aircraft Armament

Published:
Company: ICM

ICM has released a plethora of German medium bombers in the He-111, Ju-88s and Do-17 family. It is only natural to include bombs for them! What do you do if you don’t necessarily want the big kit? Or you want to add to your diorama? Well, ICM helps you out with sets like this one. It comes in a sturdy cardboard box with a cover bearing a nice photo of the contents.

Unusual for me is the inclusion of torpedoes. The instructions are on two separate sheets: one for the bombs and one for the torpedoes. They are printed on high-quality paper with full color painting instructions/decal placement. A sheet of decals is included. They look and work perfectly. There are six sprues of light grey plastic that is flash free. The grey is a little soft. That is a good/bad thing. Good when… more

Ultra Micro Chisel - 2.5mm Elliptical

Published:
Company: UMM-USA

You can tell when you are holding this tool that you are handling a quality tool. The blade is elliptical in shape and VERY sharp. It is protected by a flexible tip. The whole tool measures 5 inches in length with the blade making up 2mm of that.

The tool comes in a small vinyl pouch which protects the tool and you. The handle is plastic and feels good in the hand. The blade is made up of hardened steel with an elliptical shaped tip. It is good for cutting and scraping. Other possible uses are removing pin marks, making grooved lines, etching a louver into plastic, creating small vents, opening small intakes, etc. For figure modelers, this tool is great for sculpting folds into clothing. I’m sure there are other uses that I didn’t think of.

In addition to this blade, UMM-… more

FW-190A-5/A-6 Wheel Bay Plugs for Eduard (1/48)

Published:
Company: Omask

I had never heard of this company before but they were included in a recent Eduard P-51B kit. These are plugs of flexible EVA foam that you just slide into the opening of the wheel well prior to painting the outside color. The foam can be a number of colors. The color does not really matter, they work regardless of foam color.

To say I was skeptical would be an understatement. I tried a set recently on my two models and found them to be excellent. They are push fit into the opening and are reusable. So, if you build multiple kits of the same airplane you’ll find these little plugs to be an investment that will save you lots of masking time.

This particular set is designed for the Eduard FW-190A-5 and A-6 kits, kit # 82143, 82149, 82148 although I can’t see why they wouldn’t… more

Center Locating Tool (S) Jig-MN Diameter 50-25mm

Published:
Company: UMM-USA

Finding the center of a project can be frustrating, to say the least. You could eyeball it, but let’s face it, I’ve never had great luck at it. Enter this cool tool from 3D Peco and UMM-USA.

This tool is easy to use. Simply slide the item onto the apex of the tool. Make a line. Rotate the part or the tool and make another line. Repeat as necessary. Where they all meet is the exact center. Then just drill your hole. Simple and easy to do.

This is another tool which I didn’t realize I needed until I got it. There are various sizes available. If you scratch build, this is an essential tool. You won’t figure out how you lived without it once you use it.

Highly recommended
