Panzerwaffe Steel Cats - Panther and King Tiger Ausf B

Published:
Company: ICM

ICM has done it again with a great combination kit with two iconic German tanks. This boxing Panzerwaffe Steel Cats - Panther and King Tiger Ausf B (DS3524) has two complete kits. From the ICM web-page for this boxed set:

Panzerwaffe Steel Cats

Before the start of World War II, the tank forces of the Third Reich (Panzerwaffe) were mainly equipped with light and medium tanks. The results of battles on the Eastern Front in 1941 showed that to successfully counter Soviet tanks, new types of armored vehicles with powerful guns and thick armor were needed. At the beginning of 1943, production of the PzKpfw V Panther tank with a 75-mm long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK42 L/70 gun began. The weight of this tank, depending on the modification, ranged from 43 to 45.5 tons. This… more

Into the Endless Mist, Volume 2 - The Aleutian Campaign, September 1942-March 1943

Published:
Book Author(s): Michał A. Piegzik
Company: Helion & Company

This is the second volume of Into the Endless Mist, The Aleutian Campaign. The first volume, Into the Endless Mist Volume 1: The Aleutian Campaign, June-August 1942, was reviewed previously. This book picks up right where the first volume left off. While good, a map of the Aleutians theater of operations present in Volume 1, would have benefitted from being included in this volume. A good introduction to this book is summarized by a letter from General Marshall to Private Allen, dated 17 December… more

US Air Power 1945-1990, Volume 1 - US Fighters and Fighter-Bombers, 1945-1949

Published:
Book Author(s): David Baker
Company: Helion & Company

From author David Baker’s Preface,

This is the first in a series of 15 volumes covering the story of US land-based and naval air power during the Cold War between 1945 and 1990. The series is divided into five separate chronological periods, each with three dedicated volumes subjectively aligned with significant developments in the history of American combat aircraft and US air power.

The intention is to provide a broad, spectral analysis of the origin, design, development and evolution of US Air Force combat aircraft as well as the political, industrial, design and manufacturing base from which they, and their variants, were developed. The volumes provided for each period, covering fighters and bombers, together present a story of US military air power.

Leopard 2A6 - Armed Forces of Ukraine

Published:
Company: ICM

From ICM’s website,

Since the summer of 2023, Leopard 2A6 tanks have been in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They actively participate in battles in the east and northeast of Ukraine. Some of them undergo specific modifications due to the nature of modern combat. Recent combat engagements have imposed new requirements, particularly improving protection against shaped charge munitions and attack drones. To address this, additional protective elements in the form of grids are added to the combat vehicles. Solid screens of various types are also used to protect the running gear. The Leopard 2A6 tanks of the Ukrainian army undergo such modifications, and several of these combat vehicles were… more

Arma Hobby P-39Q

P-39Q Airacobra

Published:
Company: Arma Hobby

I like the P-39 series aircraft as they are unique and not flown in combat as they were designed. Like a lot of early war aircraft, they were used because newer models weren’t available. As such, the P-39s flew in combat in the Pacific, and the Russians particularly liked them for ground attack. Like the aircraft, my experience with this model looks good from afar, but far from good.

Reference the Arma Hobby website for this P-39Q.

British Tanks of the Red Army

Published:
Book Author(s): Peter Samsonov; Illustrations by Thierry Vallet
Company: Mortons Books

The author, Peter Samsonov, is a Russian-Canadian military historian who has received praise from notable historians for his research on Second World War armored vehicles using English, Russian and German primary documents. He has several books under his name, and this is the first of his that I have read. It will not be my last as his attention to detail, facts and engaging writing style are fantastic.

From the Casemate's website description of this book,

The first encounter between British armour and the Red Army was not on friendly terms – with the British sending surplus tanks to reinforce the pro-monarchy White Army in the Russian Civil War. When the… more

The Red Army Towards the Oder, Then and Now

Published:
Book Author(s): Daniel Taylor
Company: Pen & Sword

This is the first Then and Now book that I have read, and I am hooked. The period photographs and history are supplemented with after the battle photographs. The research that goes into finding these key places in photographs is amazing and really adds to the story with the human element of seeing the location years later and imagining the scene before you.

Casemate Publishers website describes this book as such,

On January 12, 1945 the Soviet Red Army unleashed its winter offensive, launching strong forces on either side of Warsaw, and within a couple of days crushed the German forces defending the line of the Vistula river and headed westwards. Leaving behind a few small pockets of enemy resistance and cities proclaimed ‘fortresses’, the First Byelorussian… more
