Leopard 2A6 - Armed Forces of Ukraine

Published:
Company: ICM

From ICM’s website,

Since the summer of 2023, Leopard 2A6 tanks have been in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They actively participate in battles in the east and northeast of Ukraine. Some of them undergo specific modifications due to the nature of modern combat. Recent combat engagements have imposed new requirements, particularly improving protection against shaped charge munitions and attack drones. To address this, additional protective elements in the form of grids are added to the combat vehicles. Solid screens of various types are also used to protect the running gear. The Leopard 2A6 tanks of the Ukrainian army undergo such modifications, and several of these combat vehicles were… more

Arma Hobby P-39Q

P-39Q Airacobra

Published:
Company: Arma Hobby

I like the P-39 series aircraft as they are unique and not flown in combat as they were designed. Like a lot of early war aircraft, they were used because newer models weren’t available. As such, the P-39s flew in combat in the Pacific, and the Russians particularly liked them for ground attack. Like the aircraft, my experience with this model looks good from afar, but far from good.

Reference the Arma Hobby website for this P-39Q.

British Tanks of the Red Army

Published:
Book Author(s): Peter Samsonov; Illustrations by Thierry Vallet
Company: Mortons Books

The author, Peter Samsonov, is a Russian-Canadian military historian who has received praise from notable historians for his research on Second World War armored vehicles using English, Russian and German primary documents. He has several books under his name, and this is the first of his that I have read. It will not be my last as his attention to detail, facts and engaging writing style are fantastic.

From the Casemate's website description of this book,

The first encounter between British armour and the Red Army was not on friendly terms – with the British sending surplus tanks to reinforce the pro-monarchy White Army in the Russian Civil War. When the… more

The Red Army Towards the Oder, Then and Now

Published:
Book Author(s): Daniel Taylor
Company: Pen and Sword Books Ltd

This is the first Then and Now book that I have read, and I am hooked. The period photographs and history are supplemented with after the battle photographs. The research that goes into finding these key places in photographs is amazing and really adds to the story with the human element of seeing the location years later and imagining the scene before you.

Casemate Publishers website describes this book as such,

On January 12, 1945 the Soviet Red Army unleashed its winter offensive, launching strong forces on either side of Warsaw, and within a couple of days crushed the German forces defending the line of the Vistula river and headed westwards. Leaving behind a few small pockets of enemy resistance and cities proclaimed ‘fortresses’, the First Byelorussian… more

Rommel's Ghost Division book

Rommel's Ghost Division: Victory in the West

Published:
Book Author(s): David Mitchelhill-Green
Company: Pen & Sword

I am an unabashed fan of the Images of War book series. While I was not familiar with the author, David Mitchelhill-Green, I thoroughly enjoyed his contribution to the series and will seek him out in the future.

From the Notes on Photography and Sources section at the beginning of the book,

The German Army collated detailed daily records into Kriegstagebücher (or KTBs). Rommel also kept his own personal dairy, delegating his aides to update it.He also instructed his staff to keep copies of all his orders, reports and maps. This material, he explained to his friend Kurt Hesse, would feature a sequel to his earlier Infanterie greift an (Infantry Attacks), a First World War memoir. Rommel was a keen photographer, and by the end of the campaign had… more

P-39 Airacobra Mk.I Exhaust

Published:
Company: Quickboost

Quickboost is known for its resin upgrade accessories for 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale aircraft. The resin reproduces details often not available in plastic model kits. This exhaust stack does a great job of replacing the kit’s plastic equivalent and literally just falls into place with some sanding.

With the release of Arma’s new 1/48 P-39 aircraft series, this accessory (designed for the Hasegawa P-39s) makes the exhaust stack pop even more with its detail. While researching exhausts on P-39 aircraft, different model numbers had different exhausts (most Airacobras had six per side, the P-39F and P-400 had twelve per side), so be sure to research the particular aircraft being modeled as Quickboost also makes other P-39 exhausts for the P-39, P-39Q/N, and P-400 Airacobras (along… more

Acrylic Paints Set for Humvee US Military Cars

Published:
Company: ICM

ICM continues to be prolific despite the ongoing Russian initiated war in Ukraine. While most subjects released by ICM are welcome, fans of modern soft skin US vehicles are having to make do with older kits. ICM recently released a 1/35 M1097A2 HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, commonly called the Humvee in all its guises). Acrylic Paints Set for Humvee US Military Cars is the paint set specially released to accompany/compliment this excellent new kit.

Acrylic Paints Set for Humvee US Military Cars consists of five 12ml paint bottles and one 17ml bottle for the primer (the primer bottle is slightly larger), that are surprisingly not dropper top, but rather are wide-mouthed. The colors include:

  • Primer Black (No. 2005)
  • Light Earth (No. 1056)… more

MoH AAF Aviator of WW2

Medal of Honor, Volume 5: AAF Aviators of WW2, Part 1

Published:
Book Author(s): Alan Durkota
Company: Aeronaut Books

Author Alan Durkota succinctly explains this book in his Introduction:

The Army Air Force has 36 aviation-related Medal of Honor recipients in World War Two. One mission to attack oil refineries located at Ploesti, Romania, resulted in five Medals of Honor being awarded. making it the most highly decorated mission of the war. Two of the five will be presented in this volume.

James Doolittle’s raid on 18, April,1942 (sic), shocked the Japanese military and at the same time filled Americans with hope. History would show this mission caused the Japanese military to prioritize their effort to eliminate the American carriers which escaped the attack at Pearl Harbor, thereby setting into motion a series of events, including the Battle of Midway.
